Contact information and cover letter question

Hello. My husband is conducting a worldwide job search, although he is focusing a bit more on the US than anywhere else.  We currently live in Turkmenistan.

How big of a deal is it that he doesn't have a US phone number?  He is using his New York apartment's address, but we're not sure if it will turn HR off to have to dial something odd and international if they are interested.

Would this potentially hurt his chances?  If so, we can buy a US phone number on Skype and have it forwarded, but we'd rather not do that if it's not going to make a difference.  Opinions?

Another question:  Should he include contact information in the text of the cover letter or is it enough that it's at the top of the page as part of the letterhead?

 TIA!

Re: Contact information and cover letter question

  • I think a local-ish phone # would be a good idea, and he can always say in his CL that he's currently living in Turkmenistan. He can give you int'l # as a backup #.

I always include contact info in the closing paragraph of a CL

  • He should definitely include his email address as well. However I can't imagine a company willingly to pay $$$$ to have him come in for an interview.
  • Unless he's in an international industry, I highly recommend getting the American phone number and highlighting a preference for email contact.  Although I work in an international company, most of the international pieces are rarely contacted because they do not know how to dial the number.  Also, the email will probably be the best way to contact given the time difference.  GL!
  • I just wanted to add that you can get a Google Voice phone number for free. I believe it forwards for free, as well.

  • Thanks everyone.  That was my inclination as well.  We'll check out google, we were going to do Skype.  I hope it works for Turkmenistan.
