How likely is it that you'll have twins?

http://www.thetech.org/genetics/ask.php?id=86

the factors:

1. fraternal twins in your family (identical doesn't matter)

2. your age (20 = more likely, and over 35 = more likely)

3. your ethnic background (Af. Am. more likely, Asian much less likely)

4. length of your periods (shorter = more likely)

5. nutrition

6. height (taller = more likely)

7. if you've already had a kid/s

8. if you're on fertility drugs

I know these probably aren't the only factors, but just for fun.

My percentage out of these is 62%. Yikes!

I think it would be cool and uncool for twins. Uncool on your body, your sleep, your sanity, your finances. But cool because you get two kids out of one pregnancy -- they have a sibling and you only have to be pregnant once!

Re: How likely is it that you'll have twins?

  • My stbxh hated being an identical twin his whole life.  If I were to ever have twins, I hope they be girls.

My chances are pretty slim unless age is a factor.

  • How did you figure that percentage?

The fraction. How many of the 8 are true for you.

It's inexact, but it's just for fun. Funnnnn.

  • My thing is I want to have another kid, but can I only have one?  Or am I subjecting my children to the "the twins and the other kid" or "The singleton and the twins".

I also hate "the twins" being used as reference to them.  I sometimes say "the girls" but I think that is less "twinny", lol.  I want them to be individuals and I've gone out of my way to make that happen.

Sure, they like a lot of the same things but I've tried to really teach them to be their own person.

I wouldn't trade them for the world, but I also don't remember the first 6 weeks of their lives as I stumbled through a sleep-deprived haze.  I actually Febreezed the countertops and Cloroxed the curtains.

  • My sister had twins.

Then 2 years later had triplets.

Thank god it was fertility drugs and not genetics!

    lol!

I am scared of pregnancy but kind of want my future kids to have a sibling, so I sometimes think that twins would be good for me because I'd only have to be pregnant once, but I'd get two kids, ha. But from what I hear, the pregnancy when its twins is hard (or harder). So that would suck.

yeah but from what I've read this has no bearing on whether or not you'll have twins yourself.

It's fraternal twins in the family that matters.

OMG! I would die, haha. 5 kids would overwhelm to the extreme, no matter how many of them came at once!

Right? Picture yourself with 2 two year olds and 3 newborns. I *still* don't know how she did it....

Oh, and several years later she popped out a single one. My family's fertility scares me haha!

For what it's worth, I had a relatively easy pregnancy.  I never felt really all that awful, I just had a few scares here and there.

They thought they were monoamniotic (same sac) when I first found out it was twins which meant lots of ultrasounds and test and possible bedrest at 24 weeks, with them being born anytime after that due to cord entanglement.  Turns out, there was a super ultra thin membrane between them that prevented these issues so I was good there.

Then I passed out one night and the cardiologist thought I had a mass in my heart.  Multiple tests (try having an MRI - not open MRI - the tube one) at 32 weeks pregnant with twins....holy crap that was HELL ON EARTH) showed a shadow in my heart so I was given the 'roids to encourage their lung development and told I'd have a c-section on a Wednesday and by the following Tuesday, I'd be having open heart surgery to remove the mass.  Then, they flew in some special contrast and did a fancy ultrasound and...didn't see the mass.  They sent me home the next day.  Talk about a roller coster.

So, it turned out that I passed out from cellulitis from bedrest.  I was on a ton of antibiotics until I gave birth.

I had gestational diabetes, but not really.  They did the test wrong, so I just had to stick myself for no good reason, every day.  Precautions, you know.

I ended up with pre-eclampsia, so I had to be on magnesium during labor.  I cussed out an u/s tech for touching me and told her to get the f*ck out of my room.  :S

But I was able to give birth vaginally, with few issues.  Ava had some scares during labor and afterwards, but they both made it safe and sound and now drive me completely bonkers almost daily.

But they are the best things in the whole wide world.  I mean...you can't beat THIS:

I was smiling because I love being a twin... not because I want them! I actually do not want children... I have no idea how my Mom did it, I have an older sister then my mom gave birth to my sister and I and divorced my Dad because he was a cheating doucher.

  • I am confused at this...

    Indifferent   Tongue Tied

    Ha!

I'm glad you are happy, though :) Your kids are cute!

And thanks for the info! Kids are still pretty far in the future for me, but I still think about it from time to time.

  • My grandmother is a fraternal twin.  And I will be over 35 when I have kids.

    VaaaJeana- your girls are adorable!

  • My aunt had twins and one of the psychics that I saw said that if I were to ever get pregnant that I would have twins. She urged the use of bc because of the reading that my job was going to take off. So not sure what my real chances are but definitely nervous between this and the reading that I will definitely end up with twins.

Me too! My mom said after having twins as the first born, my sister then brother (not twins) were easier to take care of as we always had some one she could tell us to go play with. lol

  • A fun fact to add. My DH sister also married as identical twin. :) And there are lots of twins in his family. Good thing they say it has to run in the woman's side of the family to count!

It's not that it runs in the woman's family, it's that fraternal twins come from the release of two eggs at once, which is controlled by the ovaries.  So if a guy is a fraternal twin, his being a twin isn't going to make his partner release two eggs.  But if a man who is a fraternal twin has a daughter, she is more likely to have fraternal twins, because of the whole releasing two eggs thing.  So your DH's sister isn't more likely to have twins, but if she has a daughter, that daughter will be.

  • 100% chance :)

I had PCOS and hyper ovulated. My paternal aunt & grandmother both had fraternal twins. Even without the one round of progesterone/clomid I did to have my period (because I had maybe 2 a year), I would probably have had twins.

I miscarried another set of twins around 5 weeks.

And THANKFULLY this child is a singleton.
