Quilted Tote bag

At a craft fair I saw a girl carrying a large tote (taller than wider) with the cutest, colorful squares with a pocket on front.  I was in love with it and asked her about it.  She told me someone made it for her but it came as a kit from a fabric store.  I've looked in a few stores and searched online some.  I'm a beginner when it comes to sewing but if I can find the kit I'd be willing to give it a shot.

Can anyone direct me to a website where I can buy a similar tote already made or the kit?

Re: Quilted Tote bag

  • Etsy would be the best place to search for one already made.  I typed in their search "quilted tote bag" and one just like you described was the 4th in the list.

As for patterns, search for the same parameters on google and you can find some.  Smile  Tote bags are pretty easy and if you search for a tutorial on how to cut and quilt basic squares together, you've got it!

Once in a while you get shown the light in the strangest of places if you look at it right.

  • To make one on your own, b/c that is always more fun, I have suggestions on what I would do.

    1. Find a bag pattern that is simple. Doesn't have to be quilted just a solid one the size you like.

    2. Find the measurements of fabric you need to cut but instead sew squares together to make the correct size pieces.

    3. Follow the directions.

You could start by sewing solid fabric to get used to the pattern and have a spare bag or skip the handles and use it as lining when you sew the quilted version.

    Good luck
