I'm a tattle tale...

My husband and I were driving home Sunday afternoon.  When we were at a stop light I saw a car with 2 people in the front seat and a little girl around 18 months old.  The little girl was sitting in between the driver and passenger.  I couldn't believe it.  I decided that I needed to call the cops because if they got in an accident who knows what would happen to that girl.  The dispatcher had us follow them until a cop could intercept.  We went about 5 miles before the cop pulled them over.  I was feeling a little guilty for "ratting" on them, but the safety of the child outweighed those feelings.

About 30 minutes after we got home I got a call from the police officer who pulled them over.  He sounded mad and I thought it was towards me at first, but I sooned realized he was pissed at the guys in the car.  He said when he pulled them over the girl was walking around in the back seat.  He told me he gave them a hefty fine and a court date.  I wasn't concerned with whether or not they got fined, I just wanted to make sure the girl had a safe place to ride in the car.  The cop then told me that they had a car seat in the back seat.  That pissed me off.  I'm so glad I called.  Their tags were from out of state and it was a little weird seeing 2 men with a little girl, but the cop said he ran their drivers licenses and nothing came up.  Hopefully they will think twice before not restraining her in the car again.  Some people...

  • Wow. That is nuts. How can anyone possible think that is the safe way to drive with a baby/toddler. I think you did the right thing by calling!

  • Good for you!  I think too many people see things that don't sit quite right with them, yet don't do anything about it (myself included).  I think you definitely did the right thing calling the police.

  • It was good you called. I had to do this many times working at a gas station in college and high school when someone would come in drunk and then get in their car to drive. I would get their plate numbers and watch where they drove if they left before the police could get to the station. I would just rather call and get them in trouble then hear about an accident that could have been provented.

  • Good call. I would have called the cops too. I have seen a few incidents of very young children in the front seat on mom's lap, no seatbelt, but it always happens when I'm out walking and I can't get a plate number.

I did have to call CPS on our neighbor's son (he has 3 young children) this morning. That sucked, a lot.

What did you have to call them for?

  • You absolutely did the right thing.  Never hesitate when children are involved.  We called the cops on people on an interstate that had an open container (beer) and a child in a car seat in the back seat.  No idea if they were ever caught, but we just couldn't let it by.

I think it's great that you got a follow up from the officer as well.  That helps to give you peace of mind!
