Back & Disability Insurance

Hi Ladies, I'm back.  Work has been crazy busy and I put all of my energy into focusing on that for awhile.  Hope all is well with everyone.  I've noticed several new babies and baby bellies, congrats to all.

Speaking of babies, I think my H and I are on the verge of TTC and I have been looking into disability insurance to cover my income for any maternity leave.  Any recommendations?  I haven't been able to find a lot on the internet as far as details of various providers and/or ratings of the providers.  I would appreciate any suggestions or reviews of your disability insurance.  Thanks.

Re: Back & Disability Insurance

  • Hey Janelle!

I have short term disability through Aflac.  We looked into them and American Fidelity.

I pay $22.00 a paycheck.  I have a 7-day waiting period (so I won't get paid for the first week I'm out) with a monthly max of like $2,000. There are options on how long you have to be out before getting paid, the monhly max, etc. and it is based on your yearly salary and also your bi-weekly payment.

    Does this help at all??

  • Yes, thanks Ryan!  I heard of one other person using Aflac, but I had doubts on the quality (I think it has to do with the cheesy commercials more than anything though lol).  What was your opinion of American Fidelity?  Was it just Aflac's terms that were better?

  • LoL yes, they must spend a lot of money on advertising!

Well, what I tried to do was figure out how long we'd be paying into the insurance (I calculated it based on to if we were TTC for 6 months, and also for 1 year), plus the time I'd be pregnant for, plus the time I'd be getting paid from them, so that I could figure out what I would be paying into the company (I calculated this with each company).

Then I figured out how much they would pay out to me.  Each company has different rules about how long you have to be out of work before they'll pay you, how much they'll pay you, and what the monthly max is.  So I also figured this out.

Then I subtracted this amount from the first amount, and in the end Aflac would cause us to pay less in and get more out.

  • Hi, Janelle! I have my short-term disability (STD) with Colonial. Ditto what pp said...your premium would depend on your waiting period and percentage of your income that you would like to get from your disability. When I had DD1, I had the lower premium but also a 30-day waiting period. I remember I only got paid $1500. With DD2, I was paying a higher premium with 14-day waiting period and I collected a little over 4K. Right now, I'm paying $88/month. HTH and good luck with TTC!
