What size nursing bra do I get?

Yes, second kid and first nursing bra.  I got away with comfy sports bra tank things last time, but I'd like to be a bit more put together this time.

Anyway, did you buy your current size, cup size up, etc?  Thanks!

Re: What size nursing bra do I get?

  • I went to Milkworks and got measured.  I am typically a DDD and have an H nursing bra--it's the perfect size.  Don't they say go up a cup size from where you are in the 3rd tri or something?

I lllooooove nursing bras...and I have been wearing them the entire third tri :)

  • And, nursing tanks:  Are these designed so no bra is to be worn with them?  Or does one wear a nursing bra with them?

Holy buckets, so much to learn!

  • I usually am a 36B but when I was nursing I went up to a 36C. So yea, a cup size.

  • I have to wear a bra regardless....all my nursing tanks needed bras.  This time, I am using the undercover mama tanks that just attach to the bra from the store but last time I wore a tank and a bra.

  • I have a couple nursing bras (2 underwire ones and a soft material one) and two tanks from Target because I am cheap.  I went up at least a cup size.

With the nursing tanks I've worn a bra underneath and without a bra, it depends upon where I am going or what I will be doing and if I need that extra support.

Could you or someone make Nancy's tanks that she posted the tutorial on?

  • Sroby, I am the epitome of cheap, so I hear ya!

I just found N's tutorial, but it appears it hooks onto the nursing bra (and I do not sew)?   Also, I just found some tanks online at Target for $10.99; not bad.

  • I was a 36B before pregnancy. While nursing, I was a 38DD.  I would suggest buying just one bra before baby arrives, b/c you just don't know what size you will be.

I bought an expensive nursing bra that I wore during third tri. It had an underwire.  I did not use it while nursing, b/c I was afraid of the underwire causing mastitis.  I wore it once and I got a clogged duct, which turned into mastitis, which resulted in b00b surgery.  So my fear was confirmed, and it was awful.  So no underwires for me ever again (while nursing).

I bought a few different types of nursing bras...medela (ok), target (not great), destination maternity from Gordmans (ok), bravada (thru babysteals) (ok).  I never found the perfect one.

As for nursing tanks, I couldn't wear them without a bra.  I was a milk machine, so that meant I was either leaking and needed a bra for nursing pads, and/or I was heavy and needed the extra support.

Ah, the joys of nursing.  Nobody *really* warned me.

I agree with this though I would even consider just waiting until after the babe is here. My bra size never changed during pregnancy or nursing, it's always been the same. Huh?

I also never bought nursing bras or clothing, though, I just slid my bra down & that was that. Worked fine. I'm sure it's not the best for the fabric but I'm still wearing them with no obvious problems. :)

  • I wear a lot of nursing tanks. Glamourmom are my faves but they are spendy. The Target ones aren't bad...I found that I wore a larger size during the 3rd tri and then was almost back to normal shortly after delivery, so my advice is to buy 1 or 2 tanks this week (eek!) and wait until after for any bras so that you have a better idea of size.

  • All my nursing tanks are from Target. They are all xl. I personally do not wear them out in public just at night and around the house with no bra. I did like the ones with the bit of lace at the top seemed like they covered a little bit more of the chest. As for bras, I waited till after I had L then went to be fitted which was a nightmare.  I couldn't find anything to fit me right. Finally I found some cotton nursing bras at walmart which I love. They are 2 to a pack for 10-15 bucks. They have a couple styles but I just prefer the one. If you go with those just try on the largest sizes they have. It may not correlate with what your measured size is but will fit. At least they did for me, Holly and Jess if I remember right. And these cotton ones were so cheap that I have about 10 of them, and I just throw them in the wash and dryer and they have held up great and we are heading into our 10th month with them.
