HIMYM (spoilers)

What did everyone think of Katie Holmes as the slutty pumpkin?

Re: HIMYM (spoilers)

  • She looks so weird.  I am getting tired of HIMYM because they introduce all the women for no reason, then they leave after an episode or two.

  • I love HIMYM and I have defended it in almost every post when people complained. That said, I think Katie Holmes was a terrible choice.

I will admit that I just don't think she's a very good actress, so I may have been biased before I saw it. She's not AWFUL, but there are so many actresses who could have been better at that part. And she'll always be Joey Potter to me.

  • She looks very strange, like she's too thin in the face, and I can't separate her from the craziness that is Tom Cruise.  She was REALLY awful as Jackie, too.

  • I did not like her AT ALL!  The whole episode kind of sucked and the story about Lily and Marshall moving to the burbs made me think of Friends when Chandler and Monica moved out of the city.

  • I knew the pregnant Lily storyline would suck, and I was right.  So boring, almost as bad as Lynette's storylines on Desperate Housewives.  I like Alyson Hanigan a lot, but she hasn't been funny in years.

    Oh this so much.

I thought her pregnancy brain was kind of funny, quite over exaggerated, but also quite funny. It bothered me that they found out the gender of the baby so early, because it's so impossible. I mean, she's not even showing yet! (I'm not sure how far along she is?)

The duck tie is driving me nuts. I know its a lost bet, but could he rebel or something??

Katie Holmes ... eh. Not my favorite person of the episode.

  • This episode was just okay to me.  It just seemed like a filler, and hopefully things will get better in November.  It annoys me that Marshall and Lily know the sex but she's not even showing yet.  Just a little unrealistic.  I did hear that Barney is going to find a way to get out of the ducky tie next episode.

  • I agree with all of the above.  I do like the Canadian Barney storyline and I hope they have a lot of fun with it.

As an aside, someone needs to fire Robin's stylist.

Yes! Robin is starting to look like trailer trash at times. She looked nice at the special event she went to with Ted where he met up with Victoria.

  • I was really disappointed with this episode. I didn't find any of the story lines very good or entertaining. I also have to agree with the pp about them bringing in a girl for one episode...it's getting super annoying.

  • Now, I don't have kids or know much about pregnancy, but with regards to Lily...she found out she was pregnant in May. HIMYM is pretty consistent about "real time" development. Last week (when they found out the gender) was October in HIMYM-land. Would she really not know after 5 months? And I'm pretty sure the way they're dressing her is supposed to be her "showing" (since she's wearing baggier clothes than normal).

  • I think Lily and Marshal didn't want to know if they were having a boy or a girl at first.  Then there was the episode where they were painting the nursery. I forget if they changed their minds or Barney tricked them into wanting to know if they were having a boy or girl. They found out they were having a boy.

I got this part, but people are complaining that it's too early for her to know the gender. When can you find out the gender? She's supposed to be at least 5 months pregnant right now (and was on the episode you described). Isn't that enough time?

  • ; o ) Sorry I misunderstood your post.

I think the earliest you can find out is at 4 months.

I disagree. Throughout this episode I definitely noticed how Ted is developing as a character. When he was with SP, the girl he dreamt about for 10 years---he didn't romanticize it like a crazy (his usual MO.) Instead, he actually evaluated (via voiceovers)  that this isn't what he wanted and was aware and mad at himself when he "pulled a Mosby."

Our little man Ted is growing up. I think the writers are getting ready to show that he's finally ready on a personal level to meet the wife.

    Not filler at all.....

Even though that episode (the season 6 finale) aired in May, it was supposed to be taking place in September 2011. So they are currently on real time, but back then they were not.

I haven't seen this episode yet, but I'm so disappointed in this season that I have no problem reading the spoilers. Let's hope it picks up this month for the sweeps.

I haven't noticed the baggier clothes - I'll have to watch for it next episode. The earliest you can find out the gender is 20 weeks. That's when they'll do an anatomy scan and tell you if you want to know.

Barney tried to get them to find out the gender, but they decided they didn't want to. Barney and Robin both looked - and then Marshall threw the card out the window so they wouldn't know. Robins boyfriend came in from outside and somehow ended up on the ground ... I can't remember how ... and the card was stuck onto his shoe, gender showing.

  • Eh, technically if Lily had CVS testing done, they could have found out the gender between 9 and 11 weeks.  While they didn't mention what kind of test they had to determine the gender, I would highly doubt that they had a CVS since it's invasive and usually reserved for people at higher risk of genetic abnormalities.

Higher risk or starting in the mid 30's... which Lily should be about 33-34 by now, so yeah, CVS testing could have easily been done.

I must be in the minority because I thought this was a huge growth episode for Ted and not filler at all! 4 years ago if he met the Slutty Pumpkin again he'd be proposing on the off chance it was fate... knowing he could see why it wouldn't work, shows how far he's come.

  • I find Katie Holmes to be annoying and just not a great actress. Also, DH was flipping out when she was stroking Ted's hair and her hands were SO MASSIVE.  Haha. I know she's tall and they are likely proportional, but it was sort of funny. Anyway, the episode was okay. I did like the Canadian Barney storyline, but the SP story was kinda meh.

I agree about Lily/Marshall finding out the sex. She is not far enough along to tell, and even if she were, there is no way someone as thin as Lily would not be showing by that point.

  • I don't get why they'd put her in that AWFUL baggy outfit in The Ducky Tie episode (the long jean skirt and the sweater) if they weren't going to give her a fake belly as the season progressed.

I do see your point, and it was great that he recognized right away that she wasn't right.  I guess I was just disappointed that they brought her in for just a short time.  I'm ready for him to have a serious relationship.  That being said, I still love this show and I can find something good and funny about each episode.

Makes sense. I guess I see it more of the writers knowing that Ted ends up with someone other than the SP, so they wanted to close that chapter efficiently so that it's not a loose end on the mind of the audience.

Anatomy scans are generally done between 18 and 20 weeks. I found out the sex of my first child when I was 19 weeks pregnant. I was barely showing at all that point-just a tiny pooch. I was in Key West wearing a bikini the week before and no one even believed I was pg. It's not uncommon for this to be the case, especially with first pregnancies. I showed at 11 weeks with my second! lol. Everyone carries differently and how and where you carry is also different with each pregnancy. In my experience, it's completely possible to make it to anatomy scan time without showing much.

Katie Holmes is a pretty awful actress.
