I'm about to spew some word vomit.....

and talk about Christmas!!!!

Your supposed to enjoy the holidays right? Im getting anxiety over them and Thanksgiving is not even here yet. Waahhhhh I plan on cooking and having both families at our house. DH has already had to clear it with his fam to make sure they can come. Some of my family members dont get along and I dont know if they will all come over or what to do in that akward situation.  Its damn stressful.

Gifts......what do we buy my inlaws. DH says idk. Grrrrr What to cook? my sil is a vegetarian and if she comes what will I make?

I know Im making too big of a deal out of this. You can tell me Im being a baby.  Im just getting stressed over this. I should be thankful for my health, my son, my family, etc.  Holidays are just not the same since my dad passed away 3 years ago.

Sorry for unloading on tn.  Anyone else stressed about the holidays? Lay it all out here!

  • I totally understand stressing!  Take a few deep breaths.  Make lists.  Lots of lists :)  I write out everything I need for Thanksgiving (only holiday I make).  For SIL, can you make a pasta dish or mac & cheese?  My best friend is a vegetarian and she's always just happy to have something other than salad.  Even though a lot of people would think the mac & cheese is a side, for her it could be her main dish.  Gifts for in-laws-could you give a restaurant gift card? photo collage of your son? Good luck with it all!
  • My sister is a veggie as well and my mom makes a lasagna to go along with the turkey.  We are Italian, so we dont even think twice.  For her, it is her main course, for us, it is a tasty side.

Also, there is so much to eat on T-giving tha t is not meat related.... all of the veggies, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes..mmmm   Plus, stuffing if you do not make it with meat. Actually, in our house, the only thing with meat is the darn turkey...lol

  • ba-hum-bug!

my advice about the family - you are the bigger person and including everyone. if adults cannot hold their tongue and be mildly pleasant to a few other people for a few hours, then that's sad. i don't like every single person who surrounds me every day, but i can be pleasant to them and make small talk and move on quickly. that's what you do.

if something really awkward comes up, i hope someone decides to leave, or you will need to decide who it's ok to offend more and ask them to leave. and when everyone wants to talk about it, change the subject. again. and again!

can you tell we've been there?!

as for food - you have plenty of time to peruse the what's cooking board - you'll see lots of holiday menus on there in the coming weeks and maybe you'll be inspired with a vegetarian friendly dish or two that make more of a meal.

good luck. hold it together - it's almost over - haha!

  • I am making calendars for MIL and DH's Nanny.  They have 40+ people in immediate family so I am adding in everyone's birthdays and anniversaries.  I just send out an email for the collection of this information.  Putting pictures of the whole family inside, not just my kids.

I agree with lists... I am making them for cards, gifts, etc, I have them for the past 6 years so I don't repeat.

    Ideas:

Calendars, mugs, books, GCs, movie package (tix to movies, popcorn, etc).  Winter wear, magazine subscriptions,

  • when Ava was much younger, i dressed her up all cute, and took photos of her next to a giant soup pot with some veggies surrounding her and in her hand. DH took the three best ones and made a collage in photoshop so it was 1 image, we uploaded it to snapfish (i think) and made the one image into a cutting board.

both my mom and MIL love it and still have it out on display and in use.

you could add a cookbook or an apron or some sort of cooking item or gourmet pastas or something if you need to beef up the gift.
