hard water

So I've finally come to terms with the fact that we have hard water. It makes things redish/pink and icky! How can I fix this hard water problem (neutralize it?)? I use tilex to clean it and that works but I just need to soften the water somehow.

Re: hard water

  • We have a water softener system. It is glorious and I will never live without one. We had to set it to bypass for hydrant flushing for four days, and it sucked.

If you don't  want to spring for a water softener system, you can do a few other things. The red most likely is rust in the water. You can get an additive to add to your laundry to keep it from staining. You should filter any drinking water.

I used Calgon in our laundry to soften the water. Hard water is rough on clothes.

Citric acid is a great additive to add to the dishwasher to soften the water and keep glasses and dishes from spotting. You can also run a cycle with just citric acid in the detergent dispenser, and it'll clean the buildup. It's good for toilets and showers, too. A packet of lemon Koolaid or Tang will give you similar results, but straight citric acid is more efficient.

  • We do filter our water but I honestly never even gave thought to the laundry. oops! I will try citric acid. Thanks so much! Luckily we are moving soon but I would like to get things looking good for when we put this house on the market in March.?
  • Spend the money and get a softener system. It costs a bit up front but will save you a ton in cleaner, soap, pipes etc.

I'm always amazed by the people on the nest that don't have softeners. Where I live it's pretty much a non-negotiable option.

  • we have a dishwasher and hard water sucks! after a lot of trial and error we found that half the cup full of regular powder cascade and the other half full of this magical product lemi- shine works wonders! they sell it a target and walmart... if you dont have a dishwasher, that company has other products too, but as a long term you should prob go for the filter/ softener for your water treament. hope this helps

  • Thanks for the tip on lemi-shine! Will have to look for that. Unclean dishes straight from the dishwasher are the biggest thorn in my side right now.
