Daycare- how long can I wait to look?

I know I've talked about daycare with you ladies before. Now that I'm only 7 weeks form my due date, dh and I are starting to think more about it again. The one place we called and went to look at has an opening. It's half price to hold the spot. The thing that we keep thinking about is that if this baby is born late and I have a c-section (so I would get more Short Term Disability leave) then the latest we would need daycare would be March! I'm just having a really tough time justifying paying money each week for 4 months just to hold a spot!

Since I work an hour from home, I'm thinking that worse come to worst we can always look for daycare in Waterville or Augusta (instead of just in our town, which is what we've been doing). This would give us more options of places to look at if we run out of local options.

So given that we would have options of places to look at as much as an hour from home, would it really be all that bad for us to wait until after the baby is born to start really looking at daycares and reserving a spot somewhere??

Re: Daycare- how long can I wait to look?

  • Don't look for my opinion... I have yet to set it up and am probably royally screwed!! Denial much?? Calling today...

  • It doesn't hurt to call other places further away to check. I'm going to be making calls within the next 2 weeks or so and we don't need daycare until the end of August 2012.

  • The sooner the better- you need to make sure they will accept infants under a certain age as well.  Most places will not take an infant before 6 weeks of age.  I have heard great things about the Educare program in Waterville.

DH is going to be a SAHD for at least the first year so we get to put off childcare for a bit.

  • I wouldn't put it off. No matter where you go there is likely a waiting list.
  • Definitely don't put it off.  Our DCP just required two weeks deposit to hold.  We set everything up the middle of February and didn't send T until the middle of June.
