Crying.... my furbaby

So today (tuesday) I took my sweet dog Bayou to the vet to get radiographs done on his leg.  He hurt it a little while back and painkillers didn't seem to fix the problem this last time.  I though that he must have torn a ligament playing and swimming with other dogs at my MIL's when we were out of town recently.

Well... turns out he has cancer.  He has a large tumor on his leg and the vet is afraid that it has already spread into his chest.  I hear back from the vet with a second opinion sometime later (weds) from a guy in Texas whether he thinks it has spread.  The xrays were a little hard to tell.

If it has not spread we need to amputate his leg asap....most likely in the afternoon.  If it has spread.............. We have 3-6 months "if we are lucky".  Vet did make comments about how he's not saying to put him down tomorrow...but maybe Friday, or two weeks from now.

I am so unbelievably sad and cannot stop crying.  Bayou really is my first baby and I love him so much.  He is how I met my husband.  I picked him out when he was days old.  I spent so many days visiting him ( and my future hubby) when he was too little to leave his mom and developing a really wonderful special bond.  He has comforted me through heartache and loss.  He has been by my side through the happiest moments of my life.  I know that I will never be able to love another dog like I love him....I just won't be able to now that I have children.  And that's how it should be...kids before dogs and all that.  But for so long, Bayou was my number one in my life.  It was me and Bye-Bye  no matter what.  What kills me is that he's still a young dog! It's not like this is happening and he's an oldie goldie!  he's only 5 1/2!!!  I feel so cheated out of so many more wonderful years with my precious baby boy!

Thank you friends for reading this... I don't know how I'm going to get through tomorrow...Andy is working a double.

Re: Crying.... my furbaby

  • I am so sorry......Randy, my 11 year old Golden Retriever had to be put down because he had cancer in his liver.  I am so sorry.  I was devastated for DAYS.

Take your time to grieve and love on this dog- cook him a big steak and let him eat all the junk he wants.

  • Oh sweetie I'm so sorry. I was devastated when I lost my first cat, especially because it happened literally the day I got back from my honeymoon! Talk about a mood killer :( You'll always have a special place for Bayou in your heart. Hopefully it has not spread and you can have him for a lot longer!! I'm thinking of you!
  • I'm so sorry.  I know completely how you feel.  Back in '01 my dog of 15 years, Prince, wasn't eating anything (including eggs and cheese which were his fave!) so my mom took him to the vet and found this very ugly surprise.  They had found a large tumor in his stomach.  Losing him was one of the hardest things we ever had to go through.

I really hope they can do something for Bayou.  T&P!!!

  • Awww Becka I'm so sorry! I lost my cat a month or so before my wedding, and we had her for almost 20 years! I knew the time had to come sometime but it was still SO hard and I cried plenty. I hope Bayou can enjoy the time with you guys and I'm sending tons of T&Ps that he stays around for way longer than the vet expects. Let yourself cry it out, and we are always here for you anytime!

  • I am so sorry  :(  Losing a pet is SO hard.  I am praying that it did not spread, and he will be able to beat the odds.  I have a friend with a 3 legged dog (had to be amputated when he was young) and he does not even notice, he runs around and acts like any other dog.  Ts and Ps for Bayou and you.
  • I'm so sorry to hear this :(  Bruce is my first dog and I can't even think about what it will be like when the day comes that he's no longer with us. I'm really hoping that it hasn't spread and you won't lose him - amputating his leg will be hard but certainly better than the alternative. Plus there is something kind of special and cute about a 3-legged dog, and they seem to manage a normal dog life pretty well from what I've seen/read. Anyway, I'll be thinking of you and Bayou today and hoping for the best. Keep us posted.

  • I almost started crying myself.  I pray to God that it hasn't spread and you are able to spend more time with Bayou.  It's amazing the imprint furbabies leave with us.  I cherish everyday with Sadie and know that their time with us is way too short.

I'll be sending lots of virtual hugs and prayers.

  • My heart is bleeding for you right now!!! I cannot imagine the pain you are going through. I understand the love you can have for a pet. My min-pin IS my baby right now, and I know I would be crying for days. Keep your head up, and hopefully it hasn't spread. I know a leg amputation would be traumatizing, but if it gives you years more with him, it will be worth it. Prayers!!!!

  • I'm so sorry Becka, that is so heartbreaking!  I am hoping for good results, and I will pray for him!  Stay strong!  Poor little guy  :(
  • Oh, Sweetie...so very, very sorry. This is news that any pet owner dreads...these little four legged people get into our hearts and become family to us. It is my opinion that losing a cherised pet is absolutely the same as losing anyone else in our lives whom we love very much. I will keep you and Bayou in prayer...

There are moments when I think of pets that I've lost in the past (my much beloved hound "Hambone", "Ginger" whom I had to put up for adoption and "Shei-pu pu" the Pomeranian...), and there is still a hole in my heart and I miss them so much. I really wish there could be an exemption and our furbabies could live forever. They bring so much joy to our lives, and it just isn't fair...my Beagle dog is about the same age as Bayou, and I can only imagine how hard this is for you guys. I totally feel your pain. I love the idea of cooking a big ole steak and spoiling that doggie rotten, to celebrate his life and the joy he brought into yours...
