Kids and cuss words

So...tell me, how do you discipline when your kids drop the bad words on you?  I'm talking like school age....

Re: Kids and cuss words

  • I was pretty lucky with R. Even though he was talking whole paragraphs when he turned two, he didn't swear until this year. (thank you hone schooled kid next door).

anyway, we just talked to him about those being "adult" words and not okay for him to say. He understands adult drinks are not for him, so this wasn't too hard to add in.
  • She's, most likely, doing it to get your attention, so I would probably ignore it or explain those words can hurt people's feelings (she's really into feelings, right?).

Obvs I'm not a mom to an older child, so maybe things will change, but I don't LOVE the whole "grown-up words" thing.  Like, why is it OK for us to say it and not them?  (Which is why Jack doesn't get in trouble for cussing when I know I've said those words.  I try to explain that they're naughty words and Mom shouldn't be saying them, either, and apologize for doing so.)

  • So far, when my potty mouthed toddler drops a cuss word, us telling her that it is a naughty word she can't say stops it.  She doesn't use them intentionally towards us, but she does use them intentionally to get our attention at times.  When it gets to the point that she won't stop when we tell her it's naughty, she'll go into timeout in her room.
  • I usually don't struggle with this.  It doesn't happen often... but, when I get called a F*cker by my 6 year old on my bday, I get a bit angry about it :)

I'm sorry, but this made me seriously laugh! I would be pi$$ed if it was my kid, but for some reason knowing that this came out of sweet little P's mouth made it funny to me. :)

    BAAAHAHAHA... and she's so precious!

Details, please.  I want to know the whole conversation.

Ha. Precious.  You two kill me.

She was mad because J gave her money to give to our friend when he took the girls (P and her BFF) to Ager play place yesterday.  I told her to put it on her dad's desk, she didn't.  I grabbed it and she got mad, went to her room and I told her to get dressed in her dance clothes (she had dance while I was going to take the other two to mass), she couldn't find her dance outfit and the frustration of the lost $$ and dance clothes must have gotten to her and I am now a f*cker, apparently.

    Ah....I have a teenager.

  • I try to keep it clean around my kids. I don't think kids swearing is funny (of course it's going to happen, but I don't like it). If he busted out a swear word he'd definitely be in trouble, whatever that meant at the time, loss of privileges, etc. If my kid called me a f*cker on my birthday I'd be sad. Sad Sorry that happened.

Agreed with a previous poster that part of the problem is we shouldn't be saying this stuff around our kids, I would apologize as well if they heard me saying something like that. I apologize to my kids if I lose my temper with them, I think it's ok to show them that adults aren't perfect either but you have to try to make amends & do the right thing next time.

  • For the record, F*cker is not one I bust out around the kiddos.

ugh, do you think she heard it from a kid at school? I would be pissed if I found out my kid was picking up this kind of choice language at school.

ah, well, it's all about life experience, right?! I am sure they all hear stuff we wish they wouldn't, and sooner than we hope.

  • She had NO idea how bad of a word it was until she saw the shocked look on my face.  I have no clue where she got it.  I will admit to accidentally dropping a bad word here and there....my word of choice is so not this one though ;)  but we keep it clean around the kids because I don't expect them to differentiate between what she should say and what I say....but we always correct it by saying we shouldn't have said that etc.  I agree that it isn't an "adult word vs kid word" thing.

  • I seriously LOLed at this, but I'm sure my time is coming.

Hopefully now that she knows just how bad of a word it is, she won't be using it anytime soon.

If she chooses to use it again, I'd let her know that she's hurt your feelings, and that we don't talk to people we love like that, or anyone for that matter.  Tell her you don't want to be around her when she is saying things like that.  E seems to respond well to that now when she is being a butt.  She usually starts to feel bad.  If she is talking with an attitude, I just ignore her.  Then she starts yelling at me to answer her.  I then tell her that I can't hear what she is saying when she uses that tone/words.  Eventually she gets upset that Im' not listening, and then apologizes for not being nice.

  • When Owen started saying s*it (or "tit" actually with his speech - which makes it kind of funny) we made it very clear that it was a naughty word. NOT OK! Then he said it a few more times so we made it an automatic time-out and it quit. He said it at the funniest times though and it was hard for me to discipline without cracking. Like, the beginning of Arthur has him sitting in a circle and then he "drops the letters" and Owen goes, "ah tit!" and I about died. Fricken Arthur. Ah tit. ha ha. Still makes me laugh. So not right. I suck.

  • I have students this year that have issues with cuss words. Yes, 4 yr olds that know words I didn't know until high school! I told them that words that hurt feelings (be it shut up or f*cker), then you are being a bully when you say it. We've had LOTS of bullying lessons between our counselor, principal, and myself... so they know how bad being a bully is. I've told them that if someone says a word that hurts their feelings, they need to tell me. Sometimes, they won't tell me; sometimes they do and that student gets talked to about bullying and usually a timeout... And sometimes, it's something like "be quiet" (yes, they actually told me that was a cuss word), so then we talk about a better way to say whatever it was even though it's not a cuss word.

I would ask her where she heard it from -- if it WAS from someone at school, let the teacher know that a child is saying it so that she can take care of it. I had one student telling kids "I'm gonna kick your @$$" on the playground, but nobody told me until a parent told me their child said it at home!

And, definitely talk to her about how that made you feel and the adult vs kid words.

  • As a high school teacher I want to thank you for at least trying to teach them it is a bad word...I don't know how many times a day you have to remind the teenagers to watch their language at my school because it is a norm in their families.  Urghhh that might be a battle that is getting lost in using proper words in public settings.

I had a kid a few weeks ago who told another child that he was going to f--- his face. Seriously? I called home and his family said, "Where do they hear that? I bet it's those black kids..."   IndifferentHmmIck!

I told him I asked him where he heard it. It was from his 3rd grade sister. Yeah. Pointing that finger, you got still got 3 pointing at you. I was not at all pleased with that response.

  • This whole thread makes me laugh. (Well, except the birthday part.)  Especially Brynn's E.  "I've got mud on my f*cking shoes and grass in my  f*cking socks!"  Never changes, kid. Smile

We're going to have an issue with lauguage some day, I just know it.  This weekend I was changing DS1 while DS2 was playing around their room.  DS1 decided he didn't want his diaper changed and was throwing a squirmy fit.

I say, "Oh JE-SUS!" and DS2 walks past and repeats it exactly.  Ha. They're so smart.

  • I just came back to add this:

When you told us it was "fvcker" she said, I seriously thought to myself, "Whew, glad Jack doesn't know that one, but I guess I don't use that word."

Today, as I'm attempting to merge onto the interstate, in the flying snow, this dude (who's texting, of course) won't get over so I can get on (and no, no other cars around at all).  "Fvcker!" leaves my mouth.  Oooooops!  Maybe I DO say it!  I, honestly, thought my cussing wasn't THAT bad.  I'm hoping Jack was too engrossed in his Barney movie to hear and doesn't drop that bomb in a few days.

  • Careful, Cracky! Jameson - you know, my adorable 3 year old - informed me that he remembers Halloween LAST YEAR!! Like, he gave a bunch of details that we had not previously discussed. So, now I'm freaking out about what ELSE has happened in the last year!!

  • Eh, this doesn't really rile me up. Alissa has dropped a few bombs here and there, but she knows that she isn't to talk like that. (And it's mostly been a "sh!t!" under her breath when she stubbed her toe or something) I don't have any problem with telling her that there are things that adults do (like cuss) that kids just don't do. The world ain't fair, kid. That's just the way it is. So far, she gets that and it's worked.
