Local senior/semi-assisted living facilities for low incomes?

I've been googling but I thought I'd post here in case any of you have experience or info too.  My IL's currently live in southern VA but want to move back to this area and potentially into a senior community.  Mainly my FIL is in poor health but IL's are completely capable of living on their own - I think MIL just likes the idea of not worrying about FIL if she goes out for the day or weekend, and living somewhere that requires little/no maintenance and has the option of amenities like meals and group activities.  They would mainly have social security and military retirement pay, so we're looking for something that is affordable and/or low-income programs.

I looked on the MoCo HOC website and saw a few places for seniors that I'm going to look into, but I'm open to any advice or input too!  TIA!

  • The only place I know of is Sunrise and the two people (widowed women) I know who lived there both loved it. But I don't think that helps in your situation....sorry to not be of assistance.

  • There are a ton in the DMV. What area, specifically, are they looking to relocate to? That will help narrow the search a bit.
  • Do you prefer a senior community or truly assisted living. I'll send you a PM I know a few

  • Thanks ladies - I think they'd like somewhere between College Park and Rockville and would prefer more of a senior community vs assisted living, particularly if it offered no maintenance, the option of joining activities, and the option of meals.

MIL is definitely younger than her age and very capable and independent, but right now they live out in the country and she misses having people around.  FIL has had a couple of small strokes and a bout of cancer so he is older than his age, but I think he'd really resist a true assisted living type of place.  I also think it would help FIL to be around upbeat, independent seniors that are in better shape than he is rather than an assisted living facility where people may be older and not as active.
