Laminate v. Hardwood question XP D&R
Hi everyone. We got a quote yesterday for granite counters and laminate (that looks like wood) to put in our kitchen, lower 1/2 bath, mudroom and short hallway that connects all 3 rooms yesterday. It would be roughly $700 more to do hardwood. Anyone have any pros/cons for either, or thoughts on which we should choose? We had a hardwood kitchen and bath in our last home, but have never had laminate of any kind before. Any opinions on either are appreciated :-) Thanks!

Hmm, Lindsay, that is an excellent point! Thank you for bringing that up. I think we're one of the largest floorplans of homes in our sub so it may, in fact, be overimproving for the neighborhood.
The more I'm thinking about it too....our hardwoods in our last house were 10 years old, and we refinished them. They had an aged, distressed quality after refinishing after being beaten up for 10 years, and it really worked. I'm worried that I'll wreck new hardwoods by dropping stuff because I'm way clumsy...and it will really show since the new wood would be perfect and damage free. I'm talking myself into laminate!
We've had both hardwood floors (in our previous condo) and now we have laminate floors in our kitchen. Pretty much everything I have to say is a recap of what others have said, but I agree with it all!
Hardwood: (+) Typically looks more expensive, probably better for resale
Laminuate: (+) Easier to maintain in my experience (I've used the steam mop on it before and it worked well), less expensive, more durable
Hardwood: (-) I never found a product that I liked to clean the floors well. I used the Swiffer hardwood floor cleaner and it always seemed to make the shiny finish on the floors look super cloudy. Never had much luck with any other products either.... so I felt like my floors always looked "filmy". More expensive
Laminate: (-) The only potential negative is that some laminates look better than others (more realistic) so pick a good one.
Overall.... I've actually been more satisfied with my laminate floors and if given the choice in a new house to select one or the other..... I'd go with laminate.
Good luck!
No problem!
You'll have to post some pics after the floors are done, whatever you decide!
