Plans for Thanksgiving?

I love Thanksgiving. I probably spend the better of two days cooking food for everyone. This year since Bean is old enough to kind of understand what's going on we're going to decorate, too. Yay for hand turkeys! :P

What is your favorite holiday? Are you planning on doing anything for T-day?

Re: Plans for Thanksgiving?

  • For the past 4 years we have hosted Brian's O-Town family and a few friends.  We usually end up with about 15 peeps and I love it.  It's my favorite holiday, just eating and watching football and parades and dog shows and catching up.  This year H's mom has to work a double (Thursday is her day, boo) and I don't really want to go all out for just his dad and stepmom to come over.  I'm a little stressed out about money (I feel kind of like a beached whale right now, my mind and legs want to go to work and bring home the money, but my body is not working with me) and I can easily spend $200 on a Thanksgiving dinner, and they bring deviled eggs every year.  I think H and I will just stay home and be low key this year.  It's kind of like our last chance for a quite holiday with just the 2 of us before the craziness begins and I'm looking forward to that.

  • My mom, MIL, and H's grandmother are coming.  And lord knows who else will decide to make an appearance.  After last year's drama with my inlaws and their brats....I mean kids...at Christmas, they aren't invited.  I'm hoping it'll be pretty low key with lots of food and playing with Kennedy.

    Eek. What happened last year?

Sara - Totally get wanting to have a quiet holiday. When I was pregnant I felt the same way. We went over to MILs for Christmas dinner then came home and went to bed. Ha.

I was curious how you were going to handle the holidays this year! I can't believe everything that happened to you last year.

We may do Thanksgiving at our house. My mom can't decide if she is doing it or not. One minute she is, the next she isn't. We may just take advantage and just plan on doing our 1st family Thanksgiving here.

  • My favorite holiday is Christmas, but I'm a heathen that only participates in the pagan and commercial aspects of the season.

As for Thanksgiving, normally I would make a big turkey dinner, but this year we're going to Egypt.

  • This year I decided that we are not driving all over Central Florida to eat with family. We just aren't.  We invited some friends over for the weekend, they accepted, and i'm seriously stoked!! We are going to fry a turkey and drink. it's going to be grand!

    Eek. What happened last year?

What DIDN'T happen.  To start, I was sick and 7 months pregnant.  My MIL sat her butt on the couch for a week, and expected to be waited on, hand and foot.  The sprung BIL and H with thousands of dollars in medical bills.  My SIL and BIL came here with their 4 kids.  Prior to coming they sent us a shopping list of what they wanted for food.  $400 worth.  They contributed NOTHING.  They left their kids here for a few days while they hung out at the Vinoy.  We had to entertain the kids, and do stuff with them (with our money.)  They trashed the house.  The 4 year old kept wetting the bed aka all of the blankets, pillows, etc.  When BIL and SIL actually were at our house they didn't do anything for the kids.  The kids trashed the house, my MIL spilled ice cream on the chair because she was constantly sleeping with food.  Oh, and after my BIL requested that we make prime rib for Christmas dinner, they showed up 3 hours late and had already eaten.

Did I mention these were the same kids that bashed our wedding photos on Google Buzz and then told all their friends about Kennedy's diagnosis, and asked them to pray for us because we aren't Christian, but maybe this would turn us around?

Never. Again.  In fact, I was hoping MIL would spend Thanksgiving and Xmas with them in NC, but doesn't appear I'll get that lucky.  I guess after 6 weeks of having her there, they're getting sick of her.

  • We are having it at our house.  My parents, grandma, sister and whoever else needs a place to go will be coming.  My mom loves to cook so she will help me because cooking has not exactly been fun for me lately.  We will be telling our families that we are PG too as long as everything goes well on the 22nd!!

  • xH will have DD, so I will be joining friends.  The host is cooking most of the meal, but I'll be sure to bring a few things as well.  I think we will go see the Muppets movie, too.

oh hell to the no. That is crazyness. I do remember the picture bashing, and the Christian thing.

  • I would like to make dinner at home this year. Just us and maybe my dad. But, my mom is not making it easy, so we will see!

  • We are going to H's parents in NC which we've done the past 5 or 6 years.  H promised this will be the last year and we can do it at our house next year.  They argue a lot and have family drama, which I am not used to because my family is sweet, quiet, and we never argue.  I always loved Thanksgiving growing up - helping my mom with the food, making my nana's stuffing recipe, watching the parade and then football, and just being happy.  So I get very homesick when we are up there.

Also H and his middle brother have a lot of tension between them, they just do not get along, so that always makes for awkwardness at the dinner table.

    le sigh...

Fuuuuuuuuckkk. I can't imagine being invited to someone's house and doing any of that. And the whole praying thing would send me off the damn handle. I don't blame you at all for not wanting them there.

  • This year SIL1 is hosting at her house.  Which is fine and all, I get along with her.  She has no tact, but she's at least nice to me.  It should get exciting when SIL2 gets there.  They don't really get along, mostly because SIL2 is huge poop and SIL1 can't shut her mouth around her.  She's getting better, but its still an issue.  Last year SIL2 would not shut up about SIL1's older son and how he squandered his chance to play pro baseball because of his then GF, now wife. She was literally screaming about it (BTW, the kid was never good enough to go pro).

Oh, and for some reason SIL1 also felt it appropriate to announce that aforementioned GF had recently had an abortion.  That went over really well.  Nothing like some drama with your pumpkin pie.  Can't wait to see what this year brings!  (is it obvious why I get SO excited to go to my mostly drama free parents at Christmas)

Although this year there is a glimmer for slight normalcy.  My cousin Rick recently moved here, so hopefully we'll be able to see his family as well.

  • We're actually going to be in FL with family this year for the first time in, I don't know, 6 years? Which means there will be lots of driving from house to house - both of us have divorced parents and everyone wants a bit of time with us. We'll probably just do two dinners on Thanksgiving, one with his mom and one with my dad, and visit the other parents later.

It will of course be nice to see family and spend a holiday with them, but I'm afraid I'll really miss our quiet little Thanksgivings we usually have in NYC with either just us or a couple friends.

  • I'm excited for Zoe's first Thanksgiving! :) We usually have it at our house and invite a few friends over. We love it and have a lot of fun. I thought Zoe would be too young for me to really get excited about the holidays with her, but I was definitely wrong! Halloween was so fun with her, even though we didn't take her tick or treating. She loved seeing all the kids in costumes. I can't wait to see her with the Christmas decorations! I'm not sure how we'll handle the tree yet. Maybe put a baby gate up around it?

  • My culinarily challenged sister is hosting this year, so...hooray!   I think we'll end up potlucking again this year because...well, this was a question she called to ask me "How do you make beans and rice?."  I want to see if I can find some gardein turk'y and then make some sauteed spinach and carrots.  Maybe Cauliflower and potatoe mash.  The girls might have some sweet potato that I made and froze when they were in the NICU.

I thnk all the holidays from Halloween through until Valentine's are my favorites. I want to make little hand turkey onesies for the girls' first Thanksgiving, but idk what type of paint to use that will be permanant.
  • H and I are actually leaving the day before Thanksgiving to go see my dad in Costa Rica. We'll be gone until the 6h of Dec. We're doing a traditional turkey dinner, I'm sure with a little Costa Rican flare...pretty excited.
  • We are going to my inlaws for the long weekend on the East Coast.  It should be fine, but I just have to drink a good amount of wine to deal with my SIL.

Also, H and I are also going to run a TurkeyTrot 5k that morning.  I haven't raced a 5k in a looong time.  Surprise

Yeah, 5k is on the East Coast.  And yes, we need to get together ASAP.  Let's cash in the kayak groupon. I'm going to email you and Jenny now.

  • My H is the cook in the family. We usually have his Dad and some friends over, we invite anyone we know that doesn't have plans. This year it's grown just a tad...21 so far. Going to be a houseful! And H decided he wants to make lamb along w/the turkey, should be interesting!
