Kim K divorce & same-sex marriage- discuss

OK- in an attempt to get some action going here.

I have seen at least 3 different pictures on FB about Kim K's wedding/divorce relating it to the fact that same sex marriage is illegal in most of the country.

Then I saw this letter to the Advocate in my FB feed today via the Human Rights Campaign (hrc.org.)

I get it- she had a crazy over the top wedding that cost $$$ and she likely got paid/comp'd $$$$$ for it being on TV and yes, it's unfortunate that many same sex couples are denied the right to be married, etc.

BUT I don't see how bashing a celebrity for a quickie marriage (which is far from a new Hollywood trend) helps this cause?

It's just not logical to me. The only way this could be a rational argument is if no same-sex couples ever split up or divorced. Which isn't the case (um, hi, Melissa Etheridge.)

Kim K. is annoying, shallow and vapid, and yes, her wedding was a spectacle and it's sad/silly/stupid that she filed for divorce 72 days after getting married, but at least she realized she made a mistake, got wrapped up in the wedding planning, etc. and is getting out before she made a baby w/ that ogre she married (which would have been another $$$ magazine cover story.)

Re: Kim K divorce & same-sex marriage- discuss

  • I think the point is that her marriage is/was a probably a sham (evidenced by the extremely short duration, Brittney Spears also), but yet legal and recognized, but monogamous long time gay partners are not afforded the same legal recognition that her dog & pony show got.

  • i mean I see the general point - if one of the arguments against same sex marriage is that marriage is a sacred union between a man and a woman and that same sex marriage would "cheapen" marriage or whatever then actions like hers diminish the "sacred" part of it.  So I DO get the general idea behind this.

but I don't think that her rapid divorce is going to make gay marriage opponents say "oh wait a minute!! we were wrong!" and like you said daisy, its not like same sex couples never split up.   her divorce after 72 days also isn't something completely unheard for a celeb (and really is anyone THAT surprised??)

What does annoy me is that this divorce is keeping her on the front pages of all the magazines again.

Yeah...I put one of those things up on FB and I guess I was just b!tching. I don't really think it's going to make people opposing gay marriage stop and think, but hey, maybe it will.

  • I guess I am in the minority in that I think it's better they split up sooner rather than later. I can't decide if I think the whole thing was an "act" or if she really couldn't stop the runaway train that was her wedding.

I know a lot more people who have gotten divorced than called off a wedding. You really don't hear about that many broken engagements.

    Stupid nest.

anyway, i'm not sure what you mean. I don't think it would have been "better" if they split up later if the marriage was DOA.  If she wants a divorce then she should knock herself out and get one.   Carrying on a marriage that's already ended for one partner just for appearance's sake is maybe even worse than getting a divorce after 72 days.

I think the gay marriage references are more just comparing the relative ease with which KK both got married and now has filed for divorce.

Re: whether it was a sham or not - I can't decide. I kind of don't think it was a sham exactly, I just think she got so caught up in this wedding that it blinded her to the idea of marriage. Kind of like a bebe bride on the knot, but times a hundred.

  • I don't think they should have stayed married longer - I think the point is that its apparently a fraudulent marriage and whether it lasted 10 minutes, 10 days or 10 years, a fradulent marriiage does more to diminish the sanctity of marriage than a non-fradulent marriage between 2 same sex partners.

  • It would take a whole hell of a lot to convince me that she ever was 100% into that marriage and that most of it just wasn't a huge publicity stunt. I mean, she got an amazing wedding and got PAID for it. A lot. If anyone watched the show, they were arguing a ton leading up to the wedding and I just never believed it. I remember thinking to myself when someone commented to Kris that they'll look at these pictures in 25 years, hah that will never happen.

I think this marriage was nothing more than having her name in the headlines which is why I agree with these posts about gay marriage. This is her second marriage and it lasted a whole 72 days. There are men and women out there so devoted to each other that their marriages would stand the test of time, yet they can't marry because they're the same gender. It's utter ridiculousness and I can imagine watching Kim K just abuse the sanctity of marriage just kills those who can't marry at all.
