S/O Holidays Poll: Tipping: Who and how much?

Who do you tip for the holidays?

How much do you tip each person?

Do you give cash/check in a card, or do you present it in another way?

Anyone you don't want to tip, but feel obligated to?

Anything else you want to say about holiday tipping?

Re: S/O Holidays Poll: Tipping: Who and how much?

  • I've never done holiday tipping, but then again, I've lived in an apartment for the past 4 years, I don't have a regular hair person or other regular spa/beauty types. I don't have a nanny or doorman any of the other stuff that I regularly see on the holiday tipping guides.

  • There's no one I would tip at the holidays that I don't tip generously for the rest of the year; we don't have a nanny or housecleaner or anything like that, and I give my hair stylist hefty tips when I visit already!

  • Who do you tip for the holidays? Housecleaner $100, Yard guy $75, Waxer $50, Shoe guy $20, Nordstrom SA $10 Starbucks card

How much do you tip each person? see above

Do you give cash/check in a card, or do you present it in another way? I get the small 4pc boxes of Godiva chocolates and slip the money on top of the box, under the ribbon

Anyone you don't want to tip, but feel obligated to? I used to grumble quite a bit at holiday tipping, but then last year I realized that these are the people who help make my life a lot easier during the year and this is a small price to pay for free time and sanity.

Anything else you want to say about holiday tipping? Last year I tipped my Nordstrom SA and she almost cried, she kept saying "I'm one of your people!" She totally is one of my people, it was really cute.

ETA: Uh-oh, am I the weird one for tipping? I thought this was something people did...

This.  The only people I can think of who I don't normally tip much would be the people at my normal Starbucks because I typically pay with my debit card and rarely have cash.

  • i don't really do holiday tipping, but i think i'll give my newspaper guy 2 movie tickets (i "earn" these from work)....and our UPS guy probably 4, fedex guy probably 2. mailman doesn't do anything special..he's only been to our door once..so if he comes to the door, then 2..if he doesn't..then zero.

i tip about $20 around the holidays at my nail salon..but that's because the last 3 years i've gone around the holidays, i've gotten the pregnant lady Wink. and i've been going there for about 10 years.

I don't have a housecleaner, yard guy, regular waxer, shoe guy or SA.  If I did, I'd probably tip the housecleaner and yard guy.  I don't know about the others...it depends on the relationship.  I'd tip a nanny too, if I had one.

  • I like to tip my hairdresser for the holidays, but she's the only one I tip. While I frequent a couple of nail places, I don't have one regular person who does my nails. I don't have anyone else that I can think of offhand that I would tip. Hairdresser will probably get a $50 Nordstrom card or something like that.

In general, I try to be a really generous tipper around the holidays for nail/hair appts, coffee, restaurant staff, etc. Anywhere I'd generally leave a 20% tip, I'll go more like 30-40%. I would HATE to be bussing tables or giving pedicures two days before Christmas instead of home wrapping presents or doing holiday stuff with family, so I try to express my appreciation for those who do, if that makes any sense.

This, except our mailman is great and we give him a generic holiday card with $10 coffee gift card.

I didn't know this till a few years ago, but it breaks federal law for them to accept cash or a gift worth more than $20, so keep that in mind when tipping/thanking them (to avoid putting them in an awkward position)!
