Thanksgiving Poll

Since it's officially November my family is in full planning mode for Thanksgiving.

What do you normally do for Thanksgiving?

Do you cook?

Are you in charge of bringing certain items to your get together?

Do you decorate your house for Thanksgiving?

Re: Thanksgiving Poll

  • What do you normally do for Thanksgiving? Well, that really depends, since 2007 after T returned from his first deployment it's always been just the two of us for Turkey Day. The first year I came to him, the second he came to me, then for the last 2 it was just us here in our home. I always cook. Before that, we each went to our families. My family, usually my mom and my aunts switch off between who hosts. Before my grandmother passed in 2001, we all always went there.

Do you cook? For the last 4 years I've always cooked. This year since T is coming home right before Thanksgiving, and we'll be traveling, we're staying in a hotel, and having Thanksgiving dinner at a restaurant just the two of us in Maryland where we'll be house hunting.

Are you in charge of bringing certain items to your get together? In years before no.

Do you decorate your house for Thanksgiving? Not really.

  • What do you normally do for Thanksgiving?  The last couple years have been different.  My dad moved to FL so I don't see him anymore.  My mom and step-dad have gone to NYC to spend the week with my step-bro and his wife.  We will get together with my side the Sunday before and then be with Rusty's side on Thanksgiving.

Do you cook?  I will take whatever they ask me to bring.

Are you in charge of bringing certain items to your get together?  Same as above.

Do you decorate your house for Thanksgiving?  Nope.  I'm not a decorator at all.  I don't want to put the crap up, take it down, and store it.  The only decorations I have are the lights and ornaments for the Xmas tree.

  • What do you normally do for Thanksgiving?  We always go to my Grandma's in CT on Thanksgiving day. It's kind of sad now because no one is speaking to my one uncle, so his family won't be there. Also, my Grandma doesn't really enjoy hosting Thanksgiving anymore, and would rather my mom did it, but because some of my cousins live near her and like to go to their local football game in the morning, we can't change it. DH's family varies...sometimes they do nothing, sometimes they cook and we try to come after we return from CT, or sometimes they join us. No idea what they're plannig for this year.

Do you cook?  I don't cook at my house, but I bring whatever I'm asked to bring.

Are you in charge of bringing certain items to your get together?  Usually an appetizer and a dessert.

Do you decorate your house for Thanksgiving?  Not really, unless you count the "Welcome Autumn" sign I hung on my door in September and will probably leave up until it's time for the Christmas wreath.

  • What do you normally do for Thanksgiving? We have a Thanksgiving service at church in the morning. Then we have dinner with the whole family (DH's aunt/uncles/cousins), and spend the rest of the day hanging out with the family at DH's aunt and uncles where the dinner is at.

    Do you cook? Nope

Are you in charge of bringing certain items to your get together? Not usually.

Do you decorate your house for Thanksgiving? I have a few fall decor items.. they are out all fall though so nothing in particular that is Thanksgiving.

  • What do you normally do for Thanksgiving? Until we moved to NE, we always hosted both families at our home and did all the cooking. Now, it's just S, A and I since it's so close to Christmas-which is when we travel/have family visit.

Do you cook? Yes, always have. This year we will be doing just a turkey breast since we did a whole 12 lb turkey last year and never ate more than a 1/4 of it.

Are you in charge of bringing certain items to your get together? We have always provided everything but the meat stuffing before we moved, now I cook everything and the darn meat stuffing for S.

Do you decorate your house for Thanksgiving? No. Unless you count the use of my PB squirrel gravy boat......

  • What do you normally do for Thanksgiving? We go to Thanksgiving at one of Jon's aunt's house, then we have Thanksgiving with my family usually the weekend before.

Do you cook? This is my first year cooking. Although my mom is cooking the turkey-then I'll make the sides and my sister will take care of desserts.

Are you in charge of bringing certain items to your get together? I'm usually in charge of desserts, but not this year.

Do you decorate your house for Thanksgiving? We have some fall stuff but not necessarily Thanksgiving.

  • What do you normally do for Thanksgiving? We always get together with my immediate family.  Since my Parents have passed away along with my Sister we make it a priority to always get together-just us siblings.  Usually the others from my Dad's side of the family will g2g as well, and we go afterwards and hang out.  E's family doesn't really celebrate Thanksgiving so it's an easy decision of where to go.

Do you cook?  Ha!  I am sooooo not a Thanksgiving dinner cooker material. :)

Are you in charge of bringing certain items to your get together? I am usually in charge of anything dessert related.  It makes it easier.  I will pick up something else like the ham or ingredients for my Sister to make...I have no problem doing that.

Do you decorate your house for Thanksgiving? We don't really do any Thanksgiving/fall decorating.  I'm all about Christmas and will decorate the day after Thanksgiving.

  • What do you normally do for Thanksgiving? We alternate whether we go to my family or Dh's family since they live on opposite sides of PA.

Do you cook?  Nope..maybe some year when we have our own place

Are you in charge of bringing certain items to your get together? We will be asked to bring something when it gets closer, which is good this year since it's with DH's family and I don't always like the things they have..I can make sure there is something I like/can eat.

Do you decorate your house for Thanksgiving?  Minimally...because we're gone for most weekends and from the Dec. 23rd - Jan. 1, DH decorates for Xmas early because it likes it too much and wants to enjoy it at home.

  • What do you normally do for Thanksgiving? We go up to M's grandmother's for Thanksgiving Lunch. Most of the family is there and we rarely hang around very long... M's not close to his extended family so it's a bit awkward.

We tend to head back home (an hour's drive) and take a quick nap then we head over to my grandmother's around 4-5. That's actually both of our favorite part of the day. We eat and hang out there for a bit before heading home to crash.

Do you cook?  I tend to take a dessert or dish to my grandmother's, but that's it.

Are you in charge of bringing certain items to your get together? No

Do you decorate your house for Thanksgiving? I might change my candle colors or coffee table decor, but nothing else.

  • What do you normally do for Thanksgiving? Dinner at someone's house. We've been alternating between families. This year, we're hosting.

Do you cook? Yes. I'm doing more this year than I have before.

Are you in charge of bringing certain items to your get together? Usually dessert :)

Do you decorate your house for Thanksgiving? I do - simple stuff like candles and leaf garlands.

  • What do you normally do for Thanksgiving?  Usually we alternate between hosting Thanksgiving here, going to my parents and going to the in-laws. This year it's with my parents.

Do you cook?  Depends on where it is...if here then yes, if at my parents then I help, if at the in-laws then no.
Are you in charge of bringing certain items to your get together? Usually we bring dessert.
Do you decorate your house for Thanksgiving?  I've got a fall scarecrow out front and a few other fall decor things inside, but nothing specific for Thanksgiving.

  • What do you normally do for Thanksgiving?  When we are in town, I cook for my ILs and his family for Thanksgiving and we do a late lunch/early dinner. We do a lunch w/ his Dad's side of the family and we do dinner w/ his Mom's side of the family the day before or after Thanksgiving. I go to my Dad's side of the family for early lunch on Thanksgiving. Since we are staying in Philly this year, his family is flying out for the holiday.

Do you cook? Yes! Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and I love making everything from scratch and enjoying a nice meal with family.

Are you in charge of bringing certain items to your get together? Everything! lol However, when we go to the other gatherings I am in charge of bringing my stuffing and pies.

Do you decorate your house for Thanksgiving? Yes! I am putting up my Thanksgiving decorations tonight or tomorrow! A got them out of storage today so they are ready to go!

  • We have my family's lunch on T-Day proper, then head to H's family for T-Day dinner.  Usually stay there until Saturday, when my mom's family has lunch.  I don't know what we'll do this year because of Bernie... Sh!t. We're never home on holidays.

    I don't do the cooking.

I am generally required to bring deviled eggs.

No decorations because we're not home.

  • What do you normally do for Thanksgiving? We usually have dinner with my family at my parents and then we go to Matt's moms for dessert. Luckily it is only 10 minutes from my parents.

Do you cook? I will help my mom cook if she needs it. My dad usually likes to get up at like 5am and have everything done before anyone even gets up. I usually do a lot of baking.

Are you in charge of bringing certain items to your get together? I will bake. I try to make like 3 desserts at each holiday.

Do you decorate your house for Thanksgiving? Not really. We have Halloween decorations and lights up now. We will tale them down this weekend. We usually have our tree up a week or 2 before Thanksgiving and then the rest of the Christmas stuff goes up the weekend after Thanksgiving. We do usually put a Happy Thanksgiving sign on our front door though.

  • What do you normally do for Thanksgiving? In years past, I rotated between going to my parents or the Jesse's parents' for Thanksgiving. Since neither of those are around anymore... I'm actually not sure what I'll do this year. I'm waiting to hear from my sister to see if she'll invite me... otherwise I suppose it's a homemade dinner for me and my two doggies. Smile

Do you cook? I love to cook... again, not sure this year.

Are you in charge of bringing certain items to your get together? I used to be responsible for bringing a couple of side dishes as well as helping with the entire dinner but not sure this year.

Do you decorate your house for Thanksgiving? Nope but I think I would if I were a SAHW and had more time... I love the fall decor

  • What do you normally do for Thanksgiving?

The day before, my family does breakfast for dinner - so we go to that. I even took a half day off so I can go this year. Then typically nearly all of David's extended family on his mom's side (4 aunts and 1 uncle plus cousins) come up and stay at his parents' for Thanksgiving - so we have always spent actual Thanksgiving with them. This year, David's grandma is still dying, so not very many people are coming up. We'll probably spend half the day at the in-laws and the other half with my family.

    Do you cook?

I help my mom with the breakfast, and I might make a dessert or something - but when there are 20+ people there at in-laws, there has yet to be a time for me to cook.

Are you in charge of bringing certain items to your get together?

    Nope.

Do you decorate your house for Thanksgiving?

Yes, I have little turkey candleholders and I leave out the non-Halloween pumpkin-y stuff.

  • What do you normally do for Thanksgiving?  Growing up we alternated between my grandparents.  When they became unable to do it, we had dinner at my mom's house.  In 2009, we went to my mom's again.  Last year we were home on Thanksgiving day, but then went to my sister-in-law's house that weekend and had the big family dinner.  This year we'll be hosting it for the family here in Arkansas.

Do you cook?  Yep.  Last year I did everything by myself since Dane worked that day.  This year, he has to work that night, so we'll have dinner early afternoon and we'll cook together.

Are you in charge of bringing certain items to your get together?  My maternal grandmother made the best dressing.  The first year we had Thanksgiving at my mom's, I was assigned to make the dressing.  I had no idea how to do it.  My grandmother was having dinner at my aunt's house, but that morning she came over and stood next to me to show me how to make it.  She passed away right after Christmas that year.  So I got the recipe and became the family dressing maker.  Dane was also the dressing maker in his family and we had an ongoing battle over whose was better.  Then I brought some of mine to his house for a tasting contest.  I won. Big Smile

Do you decorate your house for Thanksgiving?  Nope, but the day after Thanksgiving, the Christmas decorations start going up.

  • This year will probably be crazy-cakes because DH will be out of town on business.

Normally, we make a homemade breakfast at home together and watch the parade. We go to his parents for lunch and mine for the evening.  I am in charge of a veggie, appitizer and alcoholic drink at my parents and a dessert at his parents'.
