Hi, I'm Kerri and I have been lurking on this board for a while now and absolutely love all of the posts. Seriously this is my fav board. I was wondering if someone may help me with a question.
I currently have a store on etsy and I have been creating some appliqued shirts that I do by hand and I love it. Lately I have been running into a problem with the backing I use on the appliques. I have tried the kind that is sold by the yard, I have also tried 2 other brands that are sold in a package of 5 sheets. None of them seem to hold the material together as well as I would like. They say permanent bond so I'm not sure what the problem was. I thought it was b/c I wouldn't wash the shirt, only the material but I have tried washing the shirts and nothing.
I have to throw a customers order away b/c I used Heat and Bond last evening and it's like the backing isn't there at all. I am beyond frustrated. Can some one recommend the best kind to use and also maybe some tips. Maybe the iron is too hot? Maybe I need to use a different detergent? Maybe it's just complete user error.
Any help would be more than appreciated! Thanks
Re: Long Time Lurker with a Question Please
I'm not sure what your problem is, to be honest. I use H&B Lite. You have to sew the appliques on or they won't stick permanently. Also, make sure you use a dry iron.
The other thing is that some shirt brands work better than others. It's all trial and error.

I agree with this. HB lite needs to be sewn and is best for things that need to be washed (like clothing). Fabrics work best, IMO, when prewashed without softener to remove the sizing. The other HB is not intended to be sewn or washed so not the best choice for clothes.

I third this. I don't think there's ANY brand out there that will stay soft enough for clothing, yet stick enough for machine washing without being sewn. I wouldn't ever buy an appliqued item that isn't sewn- it really adds to the quality of the item.
