holiday party menu

It's my turn to plan our departmental holiday party and I just got the "preferred" menus from the catering manager.  Alot of the menus are very heavy on the turkey, ham, stuffing, etc. menu, which I find odd, I like having a traditional holiday meal on the actual holiday - for other parties, I like more fun party food or at least not those exact foods.

What's your take - do you love turkey and mashed potatoes at every holiday related feast or do you like to make it a one-time thing?

Re: holiday party menu

  • I agree with you. I prefer the holiday feast on the holiday. Plus, caterer turkey and mashed potatoes is never as good as homemade.
  • Is it a sit-down and eat kind of party?  or is it more of a cocktail party?

Would the turkey and ham be served at a carving station?

I typically think of the traditional holiday foods like turkey w/ stuffing, mashed potatoes, etc. being served in a family setting- maybe at a restaurant, hotel or club if you are celebrating w/ family out of town.  It's not what I usually think of at a party.

For work parties I think of finger foods- like shrimp cocktail, sushi rolls, spanikopita, etc. Stuff you can eat w/o sitting down and while holding a drink.

Those pasta stations also come to mind.

  • I think that for work holiday parties it's nice to stray from the typical boring work food (salads and sandwiches, pizza, etc) and get something nicer. But I agree with you about holiday food being overkill. Any nice meal will do.
  • I always liked it...heck I even liked, wait, loved the holiday school lunch...and would happily eat it over and over.

Can you do a twist on it all...like ham/turkey sandwiches from Heavenly ham (I guess with caterer it's nicer then that)

I would just call the caterer and mention you're interested in seeing other menus

  • I agree with the one-time thing. For a holiday party at work, I usually expect a variety of dishes for those with different diets (me!).I Tend to like 1 or 2 main dishes and a bunch of sides or heavy apps. I agree that those mashed potatoes are not as good and I usually won't eat them from a catering co. because I don't know if they use chicken broth in them or not.

  • I don't even like the whole turkey feast at Thanksgiving, let alone at a holiday party. For a party I expect tasty little apps that I wouldn't eat on a regular basis. Last year for Christmas dinner our family did a whole meal of our favorite apps and it was the best meal ever.
  • I adore cocktail parties all the time, no matter what the occasion. I actually would have loved a cocktail reception for my wedding, but we had more than 50 percent out of towners and I thought they would have been put off by it...

But anyway, I"m hosting my first holiday party this year, and we're doing heavy appetizers and desserts. I haven't planned out the menu thoroughly yet, but I know cheese and crackers, crab dip, S'mores bars and mini pumpkin pies will all make an appearance!

  • I like it when they turn holiday food into "strolling dinner" food. Like a mashed potato bar in martini glasses or a carving station with a turkey breast and the mini rolls with different sauces and mustards.
  • I agree with you...it's nice to have different "party" foods throughout the season and leave the typical holiday meal to the holiday. And as PP mentioned, typically that stuff is better homemade anyways.

what about a fruited chicken and lighter sides? or could you pick an ethnic menu for something different?

  • Last year my work did a brunch...  they had someone come in and make omletes and they had waffles, pancakes, sausage, bacon, breakfast potatoes and assorted bagels.  Everyone really enjoyed it, so I think that is what they are going to do again this year.

If you have to go back to work after the lunch, I can't imagine having a full-on heavy holiday meal, everyone would be napping at their desks!

I agree with this.  I wouldn't want something that heavy.  If they don't want appetizers since it's a lunch, I prefer more theme meals, like Asian or Indian or even Italian if you need to do something standard (although Italian is kind of heavy to me).
