S/O Fall back, who walks/runs outside when it's dark?

Maybe I'm naive, but I get freaked out about running outside when it's dark in the evenings.  I like Sligo Creek Trail, but I'm hesitant on the safety/security when the sun goes down.  Is it time for LadyWalton to grow some balls?

Re: S/O Fall back, who walks/runs outside when it's dark?

  • I walk/run when it is dark, but only when I have my dog with me. (He is large enough, that people tend to stay away, even though he is just a giant teddy bear.) I am not riding by myself at the moment becaus it is still dark in the mornings. I don't know that I would be comfortable walking/running on a trail without the dog in the dark, to be honest.

  • I wouldn't do it, but I don't even like to walk/run by myself when its light out. Is there a neighbor that could go with you? We had a walking group for a while in our neighborhood and that was very nice.
  • I don't do it and I wouldn't recommend it if you're going out by yourself. In the winter I either go running on my lunch break (when it's light outside) or I hop on a treadmill.

  • If I have Zoey with me, yes. But even then I tend to stick to street running or trails visable from major roads. I think you're totally reasonable to be a bit nervous about running in the dark solo. Can you do a morning run? Or are there neighborhoods you'd feel more safe running in?
  • When I lived downtown in Foggy Bottom, I used to run when it was dark out in the AM down by the White House and along the Mall, but there were always people around. Since we moved out to the burbs, I don't run when it's dark, especially not alone. And, I especially wouldn't run on a trail alone at night or early in the AM unless it's just before sunrise/sunset and there are A LOT of other runners out there.
  • You are right to get freaked out, I think. I don't run in the evenings when it's dark out - I live right off the Rock Creek Trail, and a few years ago a jogger who was running at night was dragged off the trail and raped, and it happened right near a major intersection.

This time of year, I run during my lunch break.

  • I run in the evenings around my neighborhood.

But it is a pretty heavily populated neighborhood. There are always people walking their dogs, jogging, walking. Also, there are tons of houses and apartments, so I'm always running near one. I do worry sometimes, which is why I don't run with my headphones on.

I wouldn't run on an isolated trail at night. Don't most trails close at sundown anyways?

  • I do.  I stick to main roads though, that are fairly busy and have street lights.  Also, I don't use my ipod at night.
  • I wouldn't run alone on the Sligo Creek trail after dark.

  • I have a dog, so I have no choice but to walk when it's dark out this time of year.  I won't go to the park where we usually take her when it's dark though, I just stick to the streets in our neighborhood.  As SSW said, I also won't use my iPod when it's dark/late (i.e. I'd use it if I were walking at 5PM, but not 10PM).

When I ran, which was several years ago at this point, I would sometimes run around dusk but only with my big chow mix of a dog. And no headphones and along the streets, not trails.

  • I run in the dark whilst lit up like a Christmas tree and in populated areas only.  I have a head lamp, red blinky light on the back, reflective vest, reflective arm bands, and a blinking arm band.  See Christmas tree.  I usually run with a buddy or my husband as there is safety in numbers.  If I have to run alone, it's on major streets with tons of traffic and well lit areas only and I never wear earphones.  A trail run alone in the dark is not a good idea.
  • Not a chance in hell that I'd run on Sligo Creek trail after dark.

(well, there's not a chance in hell that I'd run on it at all... but, that's a whole other post... ;)  )

  • I usually run with DH and our dog, and if DH can't do it I might get enough balls to run down a busy well light street (Wilson Boulevard) for maybe a 2 mile loop if I have my dog with me.  But that is it, I prefer to do another workout inside if I can avoid this, just too many crazies and I am super paranoid.

  • I run in the dark but I am part of the Sargeant's Program. I would be nervous about it as well if I wasn't.
