F/U on my dad

They did a heart cath; there was no blockage, but the valves are weak (probably due to viruses and his lifestyle.)  So, no stints needed.  He will be on the cardiac diet...I think I will do it with him, and just make the vegan substitutions.  He can go home tomorrow morning, if he walks tonight.  Thank you all for your T&P's.  I will see if will go to the rehab classes.  I think they'd be a big help.

Re: F/U on my dad

  • That sounds like great news!  What's a cardiac diet like?  I'm guessing low saturated fat, low cholesterol, lots of fruits and veggies?  Good luck with the rehab classes, I know dads can be stubborn.  Sounds like he's lucky to have a daughter to look out for him.

  • I'm glad they didn't find any blockage! :) Did they say anything about his valves needing repair or replacement at any point? This is my area of speciality!

Pretty much; He has to have low sugar for his diabetes, and then he has to have low salt, low cholesterol, low fat.  He can have egg yolks 2-3 times a week, he can eat red meat 1 time a week (but his wife is not going to let him...he is an involuntary pescatarian), he can only have a fatty fish like salmon 1x a week.

From what I understand, he needs to lose 100 lbs. on the cardiac diet. (see above.)  I am not sure about future repairs, though.  I will have to ask.

  • I'm glad that he's doing well and able to go home tomorrow.  I hope he sticks to the lifestyle changes, I know first hand how stubborn they can be!

  • That's so wonderful that there was no blockage!  Hopefully this experience scares him a little in a good way and motivates him to stick to the diet and change his lifestyle.  T&Ps for his continued recovery.
  • I am glad to hear that everything went well!  I hope that he has a quick and speedy recovery!!

  • I'm glad there was no blockage.  My dad had congestive heart failure when I was a senior in hs that he contracted from a virus (pretty easy in his line of work).  Definitely sent shock waves throughout our family...especially since it was a heart-related issue and he's always been fit.  The doctors recommended a low-sodium diet for heart health.  So that may be something for your dad to keep in mind.  It's amazing how much sodium is in things you eat on a daily basis in comparison to the suggested daily sodium limit.
