Hair color/highlights - opinions?

I've been getting highlights for a few years, and I like the way they look, but now I'm getting more gray hairs (Crying) and the areas with the highlights don't cover all of the grays anymore. I don't have a TON, but enough that it's becoming more noticeable. I'm trying to decide if I should keep up the highlights, or switch to an all-over color. Anyone else in this situation? What do you do? Or even if you don't have to worry about gray hair yet, what do you think? I will also ask my stylist for her opinion, but I need to make a decision soon (I have a hair appt. on Friday).

Re: Hair color/highlights - opinions?

  • i think grays are less noticeable among highlights as opposed to an all over color. i have really dark hair so the grays would stand out more. i don't have enough to be concerned yet but i think i'll probably do highlights when i have more grays popping in. aging sucks.

  • I did hilites/lowlites for YEARS before giving up this year and going gray. My gray is very silvery (I would love to look like an Eileen Fisher model but ... nope) so when the hilites were growing out, it was not as noticeable as it would have been if I went for all over color -- so as Cheeky said, keep that in mind -- if you go all over, you'll likely have to go more often (or rock the roots).

You might ask about a hi/low option so there's less contrast?

  • When i am up to spending the money and time, i get the "fusion" something or other at Bubbles. Essentially they do highlights and then do the rest of my hair a single color. I am sure there is a technical term or terms for this but i am not girly enough to know them. I love the way it looks but it does take a long time and its fairly expensive.
  • I have enough gray now that highlights alone aren't enough to blend in the gray.  I end up doing both color and highlights.  Usually, I have one appointment every twelve weeks or so for color retouch, partial highlights and a haircut, and then I go in between for just color retouch.  (Well, that was the regular schedule I had per-DS.  I admit that going in that often is more of a pain now, and I sometimes end up stretching things out a bit.  I did recently switch hairdressers, though, and I've kept up with the color and highlights a little better now that I go to someone closer to home.)

  • i have had highlights for the past several years, too. i have medium brown hair with caramel highlights, but my grays are silver and straight (i have naturally curly hair) so they really stick out. i have continued to get highlights once a year. i guess i don't really care about the grays, kind of a badge of honor! my husband has been S&P for years (even though he's only mid30s now), so now i'm just catching up!
