What should I charge for designing/printing invitations?

Hey girls! I know a lot of you make and sell your handmade goods so I thought I'd ask you for a little guidance. :) I've been making invitations in my circle of friends for baby showers and birthdays for the last year. I just mailed out some invites and one of the guests called me and asked if I'd be willing to make invitations for her business launch event. I am not a professional, I'm not even a trained designer, so I have no idea what to charge her. But it's kind of exciting for me b/c I've always wanted to make and sell something. :)

She told me what she wanted so I added up the costs of the paper, printing, envelopes, address wraps, printing address wraps. And my total cost per unit would be $.81.

BUT she wants me to also mail them out. So I would not only be designing and printing them, but also stuffing each envelope, typing each address on the address wrap, applying the address wraps to each envelope and putting postage on the invite. So it's a little more labor intensive. Oh and I don't know how many she needs yet. Any ideas? When I give her a quote should I have a design fee and then a cost per invite, plus the postage of course?

Unfortunately, since I'm not a professional I don't have business discounts with printers and such, so I hope I wouldn't be too expensive.

Let me know if you have any ideas or can lead me in the right direction. Thanks, I really appreciate it! :)

Re: What should I charge for designing/printing invitations?

  • Does the $.81 include postage?

I would charge at least double. Think of it this way: You are designing it. You are taking it to the printer. You're going to be cutting, assembling, putting them in the envelope, applying the address labels and stamps and then delivering them to the post office. Assume it takes you 2 hours to design it, an hour to get it printed and buy the other stuff you need, then 2 hours (depending on how many) to get the labels printed, assemble and then stuff the envelopes, that's 5 hours there. I would say $1.50-1.60 is a fair amount per.

I have only accepted money once and it was $50 for 2 invitations and some wrappers for chocolate bars. I just designed, saved as a printable PDF and emailed. Then again, I am also not a professional either, I do it for fun and that was for my cousin who insisted on paying.

  • I would hop on Etsy and see what they charge and Google custom invites. Get a base line for the going rate. :)
