What shoes do you wear to work in the winter?

I have a million pairs of ballet flats, but it's starting to get too cold to wear them and I think they look silly (and are too tight) with socks.  I purged my old lady slip-on loafer-ish shoes this summer since they were shot and I decided that it was time I started dressing my age, haha.  But now I don't know what to wear on my feet!

Heels are not really an option.  I teach, so I am on my feet all day and have to walk all over campus.  I have some boots with heels that I can handle, but not every day.

My standard work attire consists of dress pants (think Express Editors) and a nice top with a cardi/blazer or a sweater.  I have a couple skirts, but I wear tights and ballet flats with them...or boots.  Help please!

  • hmmmmm no heels would kill me.  that is all i wear.  i rock the tights with boots or same colored heel for most of the winter.

there are a ton of cute flats out now that aren't the ballet kind.  i just grabbed a cute pair of gray fake suede ones with floral detail at target last week.  i also have a pair of leopard ballet style flats i love.  i feel like they work with jeans or with black pants/skirt to add some fun to a boring basic outfit.

what about a fun pair of updated oxfords?  like a funky saddle shoe?

or gasp, what about adding a knee high or other stocking kind of thing with the ballet flats for a little warmth?  or the teeny sock/ped things?

  • haha i thought about the knee-high.  I have a couple pairs of trouser socks - maybe I will give those a try and see how they look.

I am currently stalking Zappos since this is my free period :)

  • depending on the hem length of your pants you won't be able to see them much and they would probably give you enough coverage so that your feet wouldn't freeze on the walk from the car to classroom or around campus in reasonable weather.

i forget that i wear sneakers and socks to the office and then change into heels for the day.  warmth is never a factor in my shoe choice.

  • are flat leather boots out of the question? seems like a simple answer.
  • I'll admit it, I mostly wear knee-highs and I wear them year round with my dress pants and flats. Shoes w/ no socks or stockings gross me out. I usually buy a big box of them from the drug store. A little more expensive are no-show socks.

My issues with these is that they tend to roll off my heal while I walk so they drive me crazy. When I do end up wearing them, I use fashion tape on my heal to keep them on.

not out of the question.  just haven't found any that i like and can afford.  since boots tend to be more expensive, i am trying to limit myself to some kind of flat-ish shoe.

  • I just got a few pairs of riding boots a few months ago and they are all flat. I love them and they are super comfy.

  • What about a wedge? I have a few pair and they're way more comfortable then a heel b/c they offer arch support. God, I feel like an old person just saying that. But here's a cute link, for example:

I'm with LD re: wedge.  I try to balance comfort and style because I have a bad back so I can't wear heels often. My feet also get cold so I try to wear shoes that let me wear socks.  In the winter, things always seem more wet or slippery so I'll wear a lot of flats or flat or low heeled boots because I'm afraid of wiping out.

Have you tried trouser socks?  They are thinner than regular socks but still protect your ankles and feet from the cold.

  • HW - I have a pair of riding boots that I love, but they don't go with my dress pants at all.  They are way too casual.

LD - This is kinda what I am looking for - thank you!  I am open to wedges as long as they aren't super tall.  I am prone to ingrown toenails so I don't like when my toes get all squished while wearing a high heel.  I will peruse and see if I find anything.

  • I walk to/from the train so I always wear sneakers (privos, converse, or pumas) and change when I get to the office. I keep some shoes under my desk, or I just carry them in a tote bag. I also just broke down and bought a pair of Emu boots (like Uggs) that have been comfy for commuting with skirts --- I hate the skirt/tights/sneakers look that some people wear.

  • I second the wedge, loafers and no/low heel boot idea. I also hear RAVES about danskos from every nurse or other "on their feet professional" and with the right length pants they can be cute as well as functional. People swear by birkenstock clogs as well, but the pair I have is not broken in enough yet and they make my feet hurt more than sing. I love everything Clarks, personally.

My sis is a doc and wears her Danskos 24/7. Problem is they're clogs and they look very clunky. They're not terribly stylish though I know they're so comfortable.

I actually have Ugg moccasins that I wear any time I'm not working. In fact, I wear them to work then put on my real shoes in the parking lot and then put them right back on when I get in the car to leave for home. By the end of the week I have 5 pairs of heels in the passenger seat of my car!

they have non-clogs too. true story that they are clunky and not terribly stylish, but Ive seen them worn by coworkers with longer pants to cover most of the clunk and they are okay.

I am going to give it a whirl with trouser socks, since regular socks would cause me to go up a half-size in shoes.  I may even get some knee-highs.

  • i love danskos. I have a pair of the "maeve" ones, which are these ankle strap things and they look super cute with tights and a skirt. maybe a not super stylish but cute nonetheless.

I treat them as heels and don't wear socks. I guess if you have to wear something then you could wear something hose-esque.

I usually go sans any kind of sock/stocking because I can't really wear skirts to work.  If it is insanely cold out, I might throw on some trouser socks, but for the most part I am in a heated area.
