Last night I went to meet a friend for a 30 for $30 dinner at Hunger in Fremont.
I wasn't impressed at all and I won't be going back. It's in the space where Pomodoro used to be.
The decor reminded me of a vampires cave. The walls were all red and it was waaaay too dark in there. The whole restaurant is pretty small and loud too.
The service was so-so. The waiter acted a bit annoyed that we were there and seemed impatient. I ordered tea and asked for sweetener and had to ask 3 times for it before it was brought out to me. When it was brought out to me, he handed me 3 splenda packets.
The food was good, but not great. For the starter I had the spicy calamari and the flavor was fine, but the calamari was over cooked and tough. For my entree I had the beef tagine and the beef was good, but the couscous just seemed a little off. I had the chocolate thing for dessert and that was the best part.
Overall, this place seems like it's trying too hard to be a trendy restaurant, but it's just not there. The food isn't inventive and the decor leaves me rubbing my eyes.
I wouldn't recommend this place.

h and i went here for our anniv in sept. i didn't have as negative experience as you did.
yes, the decor was straining on the eyes, but the food was amazing. h had a pork something, and i had a risotto i think. we really really liked our food, and the staff was super nice.
sucks that you had a bad experience

hmm... bummer... I have never heard of the place, but noted.
Has anyone been to the Canlis? We have a gift card to it and are pretty excited for a dress-up date, but I'm just curious if there is anything in particular to try or to stay away from?
H took me to Canlis for my 25th birthday. Definitely a dress up place.
We both had steak and it was very good. I remember the fingerling potatoes that came with it were delicious as well. And the chocolate cake dessert was fabulous as well.

Don't be bummed guys! I'm not bummed at all. It was nice to try it out and know for sure. Isn't that what the 30 for $30's are about?
Just wanted to give you all a heads up in case someone was thinking about going there.
We went there for our 5th anniversary. It was a blast, but I don't remember what we had. James did have a soup starter, though, that they served out of a pumpkin. I was amused.
Have a great time! I'd love to go again sometime.
TTC #2 for a million years: SA normal, CD 23 bloodwork shows nothing amiss, ovulation detected. Next step: ? maybe CD3 bloodwork to check eggs? All out of pocket, so limited IF tests/treatments.
Canlis (along with Herbfarm) are the only two restaurants in the area that have a dress code.
All the food is pretty good (I think there are better food places in Seattle), but it's partly the experience. There is no place in Seattle that has such spectacular service like Canlis.
It starts with the valet. They take your car. They dont' take your name, but the second you are ready to go? The car is ready with you. The valets are phenomenal, and the last time I went with my girl friends as a faux bachelorette, Brian Canlis valeted our car for us. And gave us a kitchen tour (you can ask for that at the end of your meal and usually, they're quite happy to take you around).
Food-wise. Peter Canlis prawns are particularly good. And you wouldn't think a salad could be /that/ great, but the Canlis salad makes me so happy. Also, you should drop by the lounge before you get seated cause the the usual bartender is fun to chat with and makes some amazing drinks.
