pre school. what questions to ask?
my old job hired me back part time: 2-3x/week. im so happy. my father-in-law usually watches L, but i really want to put her in full day school/daycare. I am going to visit a few places within the next month. I am hoping to get her in by the new year. For those of you with experience with this, what type of questions should i ask when i tour? What are things i should look out for?
Re: pre school. what questions to ask?
Ill be honest, I looked at 1 daycare, got that warm fuzzy feeling and that was it. I didn't ask a whole lot of questions. I guess basic things like do they provide breakfast, snacks, lunch; their holiday list (some schools close for random holidays. "development days", etc) as well as snow days (do they follow a school schedule or their own?). Do they have someone there that can administer medications if prescribed by doctor?
Basically, during my tour I just fell in love - the toddlers were in a karate class and just looked like they were having a blast. Listen to your gut is my best advice.
we looked at one too - it was in the location we wanted and we liked it when we saw it.
i got a good feeling - kids looked happy and engaged; babies looked entertained and well cared for too. teachers looked upbeat and not tired or annoyed. there were art projects everywhere - in the room, on the boards in the hallways - everywhere you look is kids' works. i like that. and it looks like kids make them instead of being teacher directed or helped. this is really important as they get older.
we liked that there were three different outdoor play areas - divided by age, that they also take walks to a local playground as well as around the block to look at nature, that there is an indoor gym for the winter, that they bring in extra enrichment programs (costs extra but it's an option).
ask about the holiday schedule, how you will be notified for snow days or delays, fees charged if you are late for pick up and by how many minutes, if they provide food or you do...
First off, Congrats on being back to work!!!!!
We looked at 2 and they were run pretty similar. The kids schedule, pick/drop off. sick policy, outdoor time, food provided. The only thing different was the price! lol
The one we chose we visited with Aiden. The director took us on a tour. Ditto pp, the kids were engaged and teachers didn't look burned out.
Our daycare provides snacks twice a day. Since A is only there part time I send his dinner (he's there till 6pm). They also provide meals (lunch/dinner) for a fee $1.50, if needed. Milk/water/juice are included also. That's def something to ask. Less for you to pack each day!
We get a sheet that tells us daily if he napped, how long, how much he ate, how many times they changed his diaper and what was in them. lol There is also info about the activities and crafts that his class does, but most of that is done in the morning when he's not there. And any items that need to be sent in.
The director also informed us that there is a 1:5 ratio in his class. One teacher for every 5 kids. There is a teacher and an aide on days there are more then 5 kids.
I also went online to see if the daycare had any violations with the health dept.
I hope this info helps you and you can decide what questions to ask from it. So far we are really happy with our choice! I hope you can find the right place for L, she's gonna love it.
this! i can't believe how big she is!
Congrats on going back to work!!
Well, you know me. I of course have a spreadsheet with questions I've gathered from various places. I think I have your right email address (I'll FB you) so I can send it to you.
