because it's cheap
i bought a fake tree sometime in march one year...for $8. it's prelit, scented, and easy to assemble. it doesn't look fake....people touch it to check if it's real..
ETA: i realize uw will very likely disown me for this statement.

If it were up to DH we wouldn't have a tree.
I have a fake tree because cleaning up after the evil cat eats and knocks over the tree gets exhausting after a few days.
I prefer plastic. I don't really know the environmental aspects of it, but my fake tree's lasted me 6 years so far.
Plus, no need to vacuum up fallen pine. No need to dispose. I can string it with lights by section and then take it apart intact so I don't have to string them again. XD
Real trees! I love going to pick it out with DH. We usually go to Home Depot because they have decent prices.
my currently-reading shelf:
This.I voted for what I would have if my marriage weren't at stake.
I had a fake tree all growing up due to my mom's allergies. When I was able to get my own tree, I was so excited to get a real one. (Once they divorced, my dad had a real one for many many years.) Well, cue to 4 Christmases with H (over the BF-F-DH transition) and cue 4 big fights. I liked to wrap the lights around the branches so there was lots of illumination and no visible wiring. But come time to take it down, and H would waste time until it was almost dark and then help me carry it outside to take the lights off (which made a needle mess) and then he'd swear at me for tying the lights in "knots" and fight would ensue. Plus there was the no fun of trying to keep the cat from drinking all the water out of the tree. So last year, we switched to a pre-lit fake tree for the sake of our marriage, which is much happier without the annual tree fight, not to mention we both have allergies to the tree. (It just makes my nose runny so I don't care, but it's much worse for DH.)
