Can you return paint to HD?

We bought two gallons for DS' big boy room and, while the color is perfect, the paint is absolute junk.  We've always bought Behr and never had an issue.  This time it's super thick and does not cover well at all.

I told DH I want to return it but he says we should just use it (do an additional coat) but never buy it again.  I'd like to return it and go to Sherwin Williams.

So, is it even possible to return due to the poor quality?  I don't want to exchange it for more Behr.

Re: Can you return paint to HD?

  • I don't believe so.  I think once the paint color is mixed it cannot be returned.  Sorry!

  • I think you can. If it is a flaw in the paint and not the color I would for SURE!

  • Oh, and it's just one gallon.  The green is ok (not great, but decent) but the blue is thick and isn't covering well.

    Eff it, I'm trying it.

  • I would try, especially if it's the paint that's the issue and only in one gallon and not the other!!

I know I've seen cans discounted because they were mixed and not the right color. Not sure if the customer changed their mind before they left, or if they returned them after buying.

  • If its a problem with the actual paint, you should be able to.  But try a paint thinner like Floetrol and it might work just fine.   We started using this for every paint project and it makes any paint go on smoother without diluting the color.

    thanks to jennied :)

  • I know at menards, you can return full unused, already tinted paint cans.  Because they then sell it like remnants.....at least that is what they told us this summer.
  • Yes you can. I buy all Behr paint and asked them that one time. They said if it's a paint flaw or if the color didn't come out like you asked then you can return it. Just can't return paint if you don't like the color once you painted a room.

I'm surprised. I had almost 11 gallons b/c I did every room in our house and had no issues.
