Hi,
We are booking an anniversary dinner for my parents the day after Christmas. They have a hotel room booked already near Farragut West metro but the restaurant doesn't have to be within walking distance. They can take a cab or the metro.
My parents eat all sorts of food and we're looking to spend about $250. It doesn't have to be fancy...just good food and a nice atmosphere. I'm not sure they'd be happy sitting in a loud restaurant with music, lots of open kitchen noise, etc. They've enjoyed Chef Geoff's, Founding Farmers, and Old Ebbitt Grill, if that helps.
Do you think Proof is a good anniversary spot? I think the menu would appeal to my dad -- the cheese and the meat selections-- but not sure if it is a good place for (sort of) intimate dinners. I haven't been before but I've seen it recommended a lot on here.
Thanks!
Re: anniversary dinner for parents - suggestions needed!
I have not been to Proof, but DH and I were scheduled to go to Adour at St Regis for our anniversary (it was cancelled - long sad story). It is a Washingtonian top 10 I believe.

DH and I did our 3rd anniversary dinner at Proof a couple years ago. We were there for what seemed like forever - it got a little loud later in the night, but if you got them reservations for 630ish it shouldn't be too bad. We really liked it.
For our next anniversary dinner we are trying to decide still, but Blue Duck Tavern is the front runner.
We make the rockin' world go 'round.
i thought proof was very good but i've preferred my meals/experiences at brasserie beck or blue duck tavern more. proof was so dark and so loud that we could barely see our food or talk to our friends. if they go to brasserie beck, the lamb parpadelle (can be had as an app or entree) is a must!!
i also love zaytinya and oyamel (both jose andres restaurants). cava in eastern market is great but again, a little dark and gets loud so not very intimate.
when we went to zaytinya with our friends our bill didn't even come to $200 and almost half of that was our cocktails. the other restaurants i mentioned are similarly priced.
happy anniversary to your parents!
We also thought Proof was very dark when we went for our anniversary two years ago (the wait staff brought around little flashlights so that we could read the menus). However, we were in the bar area the other night and it seemed lighter in there than I had remembered. Still on the loud-ish side though. If your dad is into cheese/charcuterie plates, Central has a nice selection and is very well-lit (but also a little loud).
I've heard really good things about Blue Duck Tavern as well - we'd hoped to go there for our anniversary this year but didn't make a reservation in time.

Thanks everyone!
Considering my mom busts out a little flashlight/credit card shaped thing from her purse when she can't read a menu in a dimly lit restaurant, I think I might have to pass on Proof. I'll check out the other recs. Thanks so much.
