Intro.... and FML

I have been a lurker for awhile, but I've never had the guts to actually post something.

I have been out of work for a year +. I got laid off from a great job during lay offs because I missed several days due to some health issues. I recently got a job offer for a great company.. the only problem is they drug test and do a nicotine test. While I don't do drugs, I recently quit smoking (within the last couple months) and  still chew nicotine gum. I stopped chewing the gum for 5 days prior to taking the test (and almost killed my husband and my dogs in the process). When I got home from the testing facility today I got online out of curiosity and looked up what types of drugs they test for. When I looked at the list I almost sh** my pants. Last night I was up late stressing myself out and took one of my husband's ambien which is a benzodiazepine (according to the website I found). I don't have a perscription for it...

After going through all of this I can't believe I f**** it up just because I couldn't sleep!

  • Don't freak out yet. They may be looking for a higher level than what might have been reflected since you took 1 last night. They're probably looking for "abuse" levels. How long before they give you results? Do you know?

this. I would try to calm myself down until I knew for sure it was bad news. Good luck!

  • they said that it would take up to 48 hours. Thanks guys, I just feel like I've put so much into getting this job... I don't know what I will do if I don't get it :(
  • If I can ask, what kind of job is it that they would not hire you for being a smoker?

EDIT: When we hire for Health & Human Services or Centers for Medicare & Medicaid, they don't even care about that kind of stuff... Only illegal drug use.

  • I think you'll be okay. I agree with the person who said they are looking for abuse levels. They understand that people take certain drugs for medical reasons.

  • Xanax is also a benzo and more commonly abused than Ambien. My experience with drug tests (taking them for jobs and givening them to clients) is they are probably looking for high levels of alprazolam or lorazepam (Ativan). I had a drug test earliar this year and when I was taking Ambien every night it didn't show up (or it did and they didn't tell me about it).
