Where to Start???

I just closed on my new house an hour ago. It is completly empty, and I plan to start cleaning tonight. But I am overwhelmed! Where do I start? I wanted to start in the kitchen, but I got to thinking that since Lowes is delivering new appliances Saturday I may as well wait in case they track in any dirt/mud and dust. So I decided to start in the bedrooms, but I will be painting Sunday. Would it be a bad idea to steam the carpets before painting? I guess I could do the bathroom, but I hate bathroom cleaning. LOL.

Also, do any of you have a good suggestion on what to use to clean wood floors? I plan to sweep, but what can I use to make them nice and squeaky clean? They are sealed hardwood, if that makes any difference.

Re: Where to Start???

  • Definitely clean the kitchen before new appliances arrive. That way the space behind/under them starts out clean. The delivery guys won't track in much, they are pretty careful.

I haven't had HW in years, but I hear great things about the Bona system. And I would clean the carpets after painting, still be careful not to drip paint (use dropcloths) but then the rooms will be really clean & fresh when you are all done!

Wash the walls down before you paint. More prep time means a better finished product. And go ahead and clean the bathrooms, they are usually small enough that you will get a quick sense of accomplishment!

  • Thanks, I didn't think about cleaning WHERE the appliances would be going! There is currently a dryer and stove, and I can't get them out alone. Maybe the delivery guys will let me at least sweep really quick before the new ones get put in!

As for washing the walls...do you just take a damp rag to them? Or do you use something on the rag?

  • The Shark Steam mop is great.  We use it on our hardwoods and our tile.  We even have a hand held for the bathroom and kitchen

  • I'd use a damp microfiber to wipe the walls - don't forget the top of the baseboards, window trim, doors, etc.

I would clean the bathroom and kitchen first - it can take a lot of time to wipe down shelves if they are dirty. Also take this time to put in shelf paper if you want it.

  • I would leave the kitchen or bathroom for last if you are planning on painting, repairing and steam cleaning. You are going to need some place to rinse brushes, cloths, tools and dump dirty water.

First thing my MIL did when we bought our house was clean the kitchen and every 5 minutes someone was in there rinsing a paint brush or putty knife so she just ended up cleaning it again and again. lol

As for painting or steaming carpets first, I always start at the top and work my way down. We weren't keeping our carpets so we didn't use drop cloths or anything, we just ripped out the carpet when we were finished painting. If you are going to steam the carpets before you paint just make sure you let them dry fully before you put down drop clothes.

  • Thanks for all of the great advice! I went last night and cleaned the bathroom, even though I didn't want to. LOL. All I have left to do in there is clean out the cabinets. I also cleaned my living room and kitchen floors....they look SO much better! I don't feel quite so overwhelmed as I did before. I can't wait to get it all painted and personalized so it's "my" space!
