Organizing/Decor Q : Junk mail, magazines, newspapers

How do you store your junk mail/magazines/newspapers?

I'm thinking of buying something like this:

But I'm curious to what other types of storage/organizer stuff you guys use.

Currently I have all our junk mail, coupons, magazines, and newspapers in various piles on our dining and living room tables.  H thinks it's okay to just throw our mail on the dining room table daily, and I think a container like this would help him not make me want to shank him in the face every other week (the Love Language thread reminded me of this issue in our household).

Re: Organizing/Decor Q : Junk mail, magazines, newspapers

  • Junk mail gets tossed in the big recycling can that sits in the garage, it never makes it in the house.

We only subscribe to 2 magazines, so those sit on the coffee table till read, then recycled.

We don't subscribe to the newspaper.

The only coupons I keep are the BBB coupon, in which case they all get paper clipped together and put into the drawer of the coffee table.

Clutter makes me crazy, so if it looks like no one's touched it in 2 days it goes in to the garbage/recycling bin. If it looks important than I'll ask H before tossing it. 99% of the time it's just garbage.

  • We don't subscribe to magazines or newspapers. We have a tray at the front door for 'real' mail, and a recycling bin next to it for everything else, haha. (My husband usually is the one who brings in the mail on his way home from work, and since he walks from the bus stop, he comes in the front door rather than the garage.)

  • I keep magazines stacked neatly on an end table or coffee table and the recycle.  Junk mail I stack on dining room table or kitchen counter until I recycle.  Other mail I stack in "to do" piles and I have a sorter thing on a desk, but I don't use it often.

I like your PIP.  My step-sister rolls her magazines and keeps them in a wine rack.  It's cute.

  • Officially, I have a basket that magazines go in, but all the magazines in it are like a year old and the new ones are on top or the second shelf of the coffee table. Most mail goes in a square lined basket and lives there until it's taken care of by the recipient or recycled. H just subscribed to the newspaper so I'm going to have to create a home for it because it's everywhere at the moment. I have a flat basket that I originally bought for that purpose years ago that I reassigned to hold grocery bags, but now that we have a new thing for the bags, I will find that basket and give it back it's original usage.

  • we have this coffee table:

and so we keep 2-3 piles of 3 magazines each on the shelf below. it helps limit the clutter, because I recycle a magazine before I put them on the coffee table. they're always the "more interesting" ones, more for decorative purposes.

we get no newspapers, try to avoid magazines in general (phasing out of almost all paper subscriptions to read them on my ipad), and try to reduce our junk mail. we recycle everything we do get immediately.

haha it's not that bad. my coupons are definitely stacked up nicely, in folders, with dates and what newspapers they come from...the junk mail/magazines are in 2 or 3 piles across the counter or table.

  • Junk mail that isn't credit card offers are immediately put in the recycling bin on the way to the house. I get three magazines and recycle them once I'm finished reading. We don't get any newspapers.
