Ladies that have been to the Carribean.
We booked a cruise today and we are going to Cozumal, Mexico and Costa Maya, Mexico. I was just wondering if any of you ladies have been to either of these places and if you have any recommendations on what we should do at these places.
Thanks in advance!
Re: Ladies that have been to the Carribean.
Cool, congrats on your cruise! I love cruising! Have you been on a cruise before?
I haven't been to Costa Maya but I have been to Cozumel. There is a whole lot of shopping (high end and straw market type places mixed) and little restaurants (and a couple of big chains like Jimmy Buffet's Margaritaville.) Since we weren't really looking to shop, DH and I ended up drinking cheap margaritas in this little cantina all day. Unless you're looking to shop or just chill, I would recommend an excursion or the beach. We didn't really see a beach, but then again we weren't looking too hard.
Also, if you get a room with a view on the ship or plan to be out on the deck when you dock, there are often sea turtles and dolphins swimming along side the ship as you come in-- keep your eye out!
If you haven't done so already, check out the CruiseCritic.com message boards. We went on a cruise for our 1st anniversary and that website has a wealth of knowledge.
We were originally supposed to cruise to Mexico, but due to the Swine Flu, we were rerouted to Key West and the Bahamas. But we had booked an excursion with the company below for Cozumel. They come highly recommended on Cruise Critic and offer a large variety of excursions. I can't vouch for the excursions, but their customer service was great. We had to cancel our excursion and had no problem at all getting our money back.

Hope this helps!
The second day, we went to Chankanaab National Park and did one of their dolphin discovery programs. The park is beautiful, and the swimming with dolphins portion was one of the highlights of the cruise for me. I would definitely recommend looking into it!
One other thing, too, that took me by surprise when we arrived in port was the presence of armed guards (with the Rambo style bullets & machine guns) on the rooftops and deck areas of the port. I don't know if they're always there, or if it had something to do with the submarines that were also docked there, but it definitely caught me off guard. I've never seen anything like it.

We did the snorkeling there too. It was so beautiful. I would do that again in a heartbeat. We did a combo 4 wheeler/snorkel excursion. If you do that, wear glasses! Sand kicks up in your face a lot!

When we went to Cozumel in June, we went to this private beach club that I linked above. It's $50 and includes all drinks (alcohol included), lunch, access to facilities, pool, and beach.
This place was AMAZING. One of the best beaches we have ever been to, and the pool is also great. No vendors around to bother you, there was almost nobody there (2 other families). You get a shaded spot on the beach with loungers and the waiters are great with getting drinks.
I don't know how busy it gets at other times, but I think there were two cruise ships in port when we were there (we cruised there).
They have water sports, snorkeling trips, etc. available at an extra cost right from their beach. SIL and her boyfriend went on a snorkel trip with another couple and the leader, they loved it.
Thanks for all of the suggestions ladies. I will definitely look into them all.
Star: No we've never been on a cruise before.
