What is your traditional Thanksgiving menu?
Ours is:
Turkey, steamed Green beans and Carrots with toasted almonds, Stuffing, Meat stuffing, homemade whole berry cranberry sauce, homemade gravy, garlic mashed potatoes, Rosemary roasted brussel sprouts
Pumpkin and apple cranberry pie
Re: s/o-Thankgiving foods
When I cook it's usually:
Turkey breast cooked in beer or champagne
Homemade mashed potatoes
Stuffing
Gravy made from the turkey drippings
Bread/rolls
Sweet potatoes or candied yams
And some kind of veggie(s) (usually green beans, corn, zucchini and squash)
Apple cobbler or some other type of dessert
Oh and wine, gotta have some wine
At Grandma's we always have:
Turkey
Homemade mashed potatoes
Gravy
Stuffing
Green bean casserole
Mashed carrots and turnips
Both whole berry and regular cranberry sauce
Rolls
Various desserts
At M's grandmother's:
Turkey, mashed potatoes, green beans, pintos, mac & cheese (that one was hilarious to me when I first started going with him up there), deviled eggs, stuffing, squash, some kind of casserole, yeast rolls, random desserts
At my grandmother's:
Turkey, gravy, mashed potatoes, carrot or green bean casserole (or both!), corn pudding (BLECK!), sweet potatoes or sweet potato casserole, stuffing, cranberry sauce, broccoli and cheese sauce, maybe another random vegetable, bread of some kind
Pumpkin pie, possibly apple pie, cookies, and maybe another random dessert
M's family is definitely more country in their selections
And mine loooooves casseroles!
That's always my request for my side of the family's Thanksgiving. J & I both love us some mac and cheese! Glad to know we're not alone. hahaha
This year's:
Cider-brined turkey, pan gravey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, sweet potato casserole, green bean casserole, corn pudding, green salad, applesauce, cranberry sauce and rolls.
Peanut Butter Chocolate pie, Pumpkin pie, Caramel apple cheesecake pie.
REALLY EXCITED.
Kate's Recipe Box || Relatively Bookish
We always have turkey, mom makes DIVINE sausage stuffing, then the usual veggies. Grandmother will make pumpkin pies. And my favorite is that my aunt makes mulled wine. LOVE.
We've mixed things up by having pork one year, smoked turkey another, deer, BBQ. Just whatever, we're not picky or sticklers for tradition or anything.
At my Dad's side of the family Thanksgiving there is always mac & cheese. My sister and cousins are obsessed w/ it and would be sad to see it missing from the menu.
Ooooh, what's the rosemary roasted brussel sprout recipe... sounds yummy!
Our menu is:
Turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes, gravy, green beans, carrots, broccoli, stuffed mushrooms, artichokes, spinach pie, asparagus pie, sweet potatoes, squash, beets, some onion thing, and usually we have some type of pasta - raviolis or stuffed shells, popovers, salad (everything is homemade)
Dessert - apple pie, choc chip cookies, boston creme pie, sugar cookies, cheesecake, cupcakes, peanut butter crisp things, and whatever else people bring.
My nephew LOVES Boston creme pie and always wants me to make him one. Maybe I'll do that for Thanksgiving this year.
Our menu is: Turkey, ham, mashed potatoes, stuffing, broc/cheese rice casserole, green bean casserole, corn, gravy, rolls and desserts.
I think it's interesting that everyone has said they have stuffing. Aren't there some Southern girls in that list? I thought generally it is dressing down here.
We have turkey, cornbread dressing, giblet gravy, sweet potatoes, green beans (my stepson does them and they are amazing), corn, mashed potatoes, cranberry orange relish, that nasty canned cranberry sauce, fruit salad, rolls.
For desserts, traditionally it is pumpkin pie, pecan pie, chocolate chess pie (yummy!!), and maybe a banana cream pie. I found a recipe a few years ago for a pumpkin pecan pie and it's delicious. My husband prefers that over a standard pumpkin or pecan.
Turkey, mashed potatos and gravy, homemade stuffing, yams, green beans, corn/lima beans, sweet potato pie, salad, rolls, oysters, cranberry sauce, shrimp cocktails
Pumpkin pie, apple pie, pecan pie
Last year my mother-in-law woke up and decided to serve ham....
I have no clue about that one....
In my house growing up stuffing and dressing were used interchangeably. My H's family is split as to what they call it! I never thought of it as regional.
