moving to DC & need advice on areas please

We just found out we are moving to DC next June/July. DH will be working at the Pentagon. What are some good areas to look at for housing? Where are the best schools? He doesn't mind having a commute if it means living in a good area with good schools (hopefully an hour or less). We are pretty farmiliar with the area, he lived in West Springfield growing up and we come up there fairly often. Any advice would be GREATLY appreciated! Thanks in advance!

ETA: We are wanting to rent and the price range is $2500-$3000. We would like a good size house, over 2300 sq feet, hopefully a nice sized backyard and single family. Thanks again!

  • How much are you willing to spend on rent, and what size house are you looking for? Arlington, VA would be a great place to live if your husband is working at the Pentagon, and it has great schools. I think you could also live pretty much anywhere in Alexandria or Fairfax County and have a commute under an hour.

  • as pp said, we can probably make better recommendations based if we have an idea of your budget and what you want.

i'd probably recommend staying in arlington or alexandria to keep commuting time to a minimum.

    good luck with your search!

  • Are you looking to buy or rent? size? budget?

I would say live in Arlington or Alexandria but it all depends on what you want or can afford. I currently live 6 miles from the Pentagon (and work close by) and it can take me 30 minutes to get to work some mornings.

  • I love our neighborhood - its SFH, good commute to the Pentagon and a little less expensive than Arlington.  Schools, however, are not the best in the area (but the Elementary school in our neighborhood is good).  Knowing your price point though would be helpful to know if it would be a good fit.
  • I'd check the houses in the residential neighborhood between Pentagon City/Pentagon Row and Crystal city (Between 16th St S and 23rd St S).  I used to live in that neighborhood, and it was fantastic.  Close to everything.  Safe.

Most of the houses are older/smaller (around 1500sqft cape cods), but you might be able to find a larger renovated SFH that someone is trying to rent - there are some bump-outs/renovations sprinkled throughout the neighborhood.  I think the smaller places go for around $2500, so maybe you'd be able to find something big enough in your price range?  Instead of CL, I'd check with a real estate agent - probably Arlington Realty, Weichert, or maybe McInerney (something like that...)

  • How far out are you willing to go?  To get a 2300 sq ft house for $2500, you're going to need to go further out.  Close to an hour commute most likely.  (Which is common btw.  My 8 mile commute can take 45 mins some mornings.)  By comparison, homes in my neighborhood are in the 3500 range for about 1700 sq ft (give or take).  If you're willing to go smaller, you'll be able to be closer to work (which would be my preference).  Our house is 1800 sq ft for that reason.
