Your thoughts on OKC

Hi,

I was wondering how you all like the Oklahoma City area? My husband and I were thinking about applying to some jobs in the area, near the Will Rogers World Airport. I?m a city girl who loves being close to nature. My husband is a city boy who loves playing soccer. What sorts of things are there to do as a resident? What is the best area to live in? We are in our early to mid-20?s. TIA!

Re: Your thoughts on OKC

  • Hi there!  I have lived in Norman (a suburb of OKC) for half of my life.  I moved from a craptastic town in Kansas so really anything is better than that. I work in N. OKC and commute from Norman everyday.  I love OKC. I love living here and I have stayed here for that reason. I think OKC has a great work-life balance and people here are generally very, very nice. Sure, it doesn't have the hustle and bustle of Dallas or the shopping or the outdoor activities but...I like that OKC has a slow pace.

There are a lot of things to do here.....Thunder games are so much fun (get over NBA lockout)!!  Anything OU or OSU is usually a hot ticket item - we are incredibly college oriented here which is great.  There are a lot of fun, diverse places to eat (seriously, there are!).  Pretty decent shopping (we just got a Whole Foods - oh Lord, that place is packed!)....there are quite a few outdoorsy activities but I don't know what they are!

As far as places to live - Mustang is an up and coming community near Will Rogers - quite a few nesties live there.  Yukon is nice.  Of course, I love Norman.

I agree with pretty much everything puppy wrote! I would also say you could live in west Edmond, northwest OKC, or southwest OKC and commute easily to Will Rogers.

If you all do move here, this board is full of real estate suggestions, school opinions, restaurant and shopping recs, etc.

  • Agree with everything. I actually live just a very short distance south of the airport, and I love it (and live very near some soccer fields!). I grew up in Chicago, spent some time in Dallas, and I've been in OKC for ten years now. I think it will have a lot of what you're looking for: City life (it's very up-and-coming), but also very close to nature and the country. Lots to do and see, and like Puppy said, full of friendly people.

  • There are a lot of changes taking place in OKC right now - it is a pretty exciting time to live here.  The arrival of the Thunder has really changed the entire dynamic of our city in a really, really great way. Our downtown is absolutely gorgeous - we have a park downtown - the Myriad Gardens - oh my, that is a great place to walk around, play with your kids (dog), ride your bike, have a picnic...I just love going there.

And I mentioned the arrival of Whole Foods in a previous post - I know it sounds lame but the ENTIRE CITY was just estatic for it to open.  Very seldom do you find a community get so excited about the "little things" and I guess that's one of the biggest reasons why I love living here so much!

  • I don't live in OKC [grew up an hour south of OKC and now live an hour north of it], but I'm in OKC all the time. I can tell you, I'm never ever bored in OKC - there's always something going on, always something to do.

As for the nature part, one of my coworkers is from Colorado and loves the outdoors. She frequently goes to southeast Oklahoma or to my hometown [we have a wildlife refuge with great hiking trails not far from where I grew up] to go hiking, boating etc. There's lot to do and see in the state as a whole.

  • I'm not from Oklahoma, but I've been here for about 13 years.  I moved here in high school and couldn't wait to leave, but now I sort of like it.  Except for the weather, I think it is a great place!  I am not a fan of the hot summers or the wind all the time, but the people here are really nice and there is a lot to do.  Will Rogers is pretty central so I think it give you a lot of options on where to live too.  Mustang or Yukon are just West of the airport and Moore and Norman are just South.  Like PW said, there is a lot of fun stuff downtown for more of the "city" in you, but lots of outdoorsy things too (though I don't know about many of them becuase I am not an outdoors person at all!)
