baby carriers and newborns

I'm hoping you experienced moms can help me with some baby carrier wisdom.

I had a gift card for Babies R Us and wanted a Moby Wrap, but when I went they didn't have any.  I wound up getting this instead: http://www.infantino.com/product.cfm?product_id=1197  and in principle, I like it.  It seems comfortable and not too complicated.

However, I've tried it out for a few minutes and Minibini doesn't seem to really "fit" in it comfortably.  I feel like he must be really smooshed in there (although he likes being swaddled and probably enjoys the smooshed feeling, and doesn't cry in there or anything).  Also I keep worrying that his face is getting mashed up against my shirt and he is going to suffocate.

Is he just too small for baby wearing right now (5.5 pounds)?  The package does say it's for infants 8 to 35 pounds.  Should I put it away until he gets a little bigger?  Would he really suffocate with his face in my shirt or am I just being paranoid?  I turn his head to the side but he usually just turns it right back into my shirt!

Sorry, this is a lot longer than I planned.  I'm such a nervous new mom--help!

Re: baby carriers and newborns

  • I think I'd wait til he's bigger.  8 lbs at least.  We used a bjorn and I remember being paranoid that W would suffocate in there too cause he would just want to be face forward into my chest.  I'd always turn his head to the side.
  • Those  are fine. I have something like that and have been using it since DD was a week old. Make sure he is high enough up on you (you should be able to kiss his head) and that you at least cross the straps behind his back. You could still be froggying his legs at the moment. He will look a bit smushed but its fine as long asyou can still see him.

  • I would wait til the proper weight limit. The rule of thumb with any carrier is that you should always be able to kiss the top of their head. We have several carriers and use them all the time and that one is fine but I wouldn't feel comfortable using it until he hits the 8 lbs.

  • I haven't read the responses, so this has probably already been said.

It looks very similar to my Babyhawk. As long as you have minibini up high enough (his head against the top of your breasts, with the crown of his head close to your collar bone), he should be fine. Make sure you tighten it enough that he won't slip down. It took me quite a few times to get my mei tai tight enough when D was teeny.

If you have any more gift cards, I'd still go ahead and order the Moby. Obviously I don't know minibini's temperament, but when D was a newborn, he didn't like being in the mei tai that long. He preferred the stretchy wrap.

  • Ergo! Ergo! Ergo!  Hands down the best baby thing I ever bought. It's good for newborn to age 3.  I can't say enough about it.

I agree the ergo is great, but she would need the newborn insert with it as well, especially with how small he is.

  • I completely agree with all that previous posters have said.  I never had an Ergo, but I LOVED my moby and found it to be invaluable with both of my kids.   We also had a Bjorn that was more convenient to just pop them in and out of for short trips but would hurt my back/shoulders after awhile.  It is really easy to make your own Moby wrap too, all it takes is fabric :)

  • I registered for an Ergo but it's like $125 to get the carrier and infant insert, so right now it's not really affordable to buy it. Maybe someone will get it for me as a gift or I will be able to find a used one sometime. I totally want one though--I wanted it the first time I saw one and I wasn't even married or pg yet, lol!
  • I second the Ergo.  We used one (with the Heart 2 Heart insert) when K was itty-bitty (he just just over 6 lbs at birth) and we still use it today (he's 16 months and a little over 22 lbs).  See if you can find one on CL or Ebay?

I also liked the Moby, although after a few months, K got too big for it and it's been sitting in a closet ever since.

With the particular carrier you got, I'd suggest waiting until he's a bit older or heavier to use it, especially if they say the weight standards start at 8lbs.

  • A ring sling would be awesome for him at this age. You can use it longer than a moby, and it is so easy to use. DD lived in ours for like 4 months, and I still use it sometimes, when I am not using the ergo!

  • He's not too small for babywearing. V was just over 6lbs when we brought her home and I wore her almost non-stop...on walks, doing laundry, to hockey games. At that size, I used a SleepyWrap (like a moby) and the Ergo with the newborn insert.

I agree with this, I just think she needs to get a different carrier at this size, like the moby or ergo with the newborn insert (or I have heard some people use a rolled up towel somehow, I don't know since we only used the moby and ring sling until 4 or 5 months and then started the ergo)
