WWIND/ Taking dog into US

Anyone done this?  Not permanently, but as part of a trip?  I'm wondering if we should take her with us when we go back to the US for Christmas.

The info I'm reading seems to make it sound really easy.  As in, just have her vaccination records translated and that she's up to date.

I'm worried about the stress on her, but what's more stressful-- travel or  staying with new people for two weeks?

Re: WWIND/ Taking dog into US

  • We brought our little dog over here and I cried watching her crate go up the conveyor belt into the plane.  I could tell she was terrified and there was nothing I could do.  I'd leave Lucy if you're just gone for two weeks.  It'll save you the stress of worrying about her flying.
  • Agreed, travel would probably be more stressful if she would be in the cargo area.

We're headed to the Maldives on Christmas Eve!

  • I would imagine there would be a lot of paperwork, in both directions.  Not to mention the stress of traveling.

Page Lane, she has lots of experience with this.

  • No no, definitely not in cargo.  I would only do it if I could bring her in cabin. I was reading my airlines policy and there are up to 4 pets allowed in the economy cabin during a flight, so that's positive.  But I would have to pay for each leg of the flight (4 in total) so it would be about $400 total. Which pretty much negates the idea anyway as that's ridiculous.
  • I struggle with this as well.  We're going on vacation for a week to Switzerland between Christmas and New Years, and I'm not sure whether to take our cat (we'll be driving, but it's a 9 hour drive).  Bottom line, it's hard to know what is worse for the animals because they can't talk.

I'd say, if you find a good kennel where she'll be comfortable, or find someone you trust to come over and pet sit, then I'd keep her home.  Otherwise, you might have to take her with you, just for lack of options.  Good luck!

  • I'd leave her.  That's a lot of money and stress.  She will be freaking out for each plane trip, too.  She may be a bit traumatized when you get back to Sweden, but she'll get over it in a week or so.

  • Leave her, see if you can find a puppy camp for her. Maddy loves going on holiday, she gets to play all day and go on walks. Talk to other local dog owners to find a good place.

  • This summer we'll be in the States for about three weeks and I'm leaving Barney with his dog walker.  There is no way in hell I'd put him through that kind of travel for just a trip - perhaps if we were going to be there for a few months or permanently, but not for a two week trip.

I thought they always had to fly in cargo on international flights.

This has always been the rule for the UK but not other countries. And it is changing for the UK as well

Oh really.  So can they fly in the cabin now from the UK?  We're flying with Bella Dec. 22 and I assumed she'd have to go in the cargo.

The new PETS scheme doesn't start until january 2012 and I am not even positive it allows pets in the cabin at all still. I looked on http://talk.uk-yankee.com/index.php?topic=70546.0 and I didn't see that part had changed. I assume your pet will have to go in cargo.

  • We've flown with our dog in cabin to bring her over to the ME with no problems - she was in quarantine for less than 12 hours (basically overnight). I then flew back with her in cabin to the US (since she couldn't go to Saudi) - getting into the US was not a problem, they just wanted a rabies certification. We flew separately in August to come back to the ME and DH took her with no problem and again she was quarantined overnight. it made me happy knowing she was in cabin with us the whole time and she is a super easy flier. However, we're headed to Switzerland for Xmas and then the US after - the thought crossed my mind to take her, but the cost of flights and it can be a pain to get the export permit from the US (it would have to be done really quickly) and then get the import permit for the ME - we just decided we will leave her with either friends or in a kennel. For us it's just a headache to keep bringing her back and forth because Bahrain requires a certain amount of days to get the permit, etc etc. It also limits your stop over and flight options.

After all that, I would probably say just to leave her if you can.  :-

  • We did it with the puppy several times in the cabin. It was only an 8 hour flight and not too awful, but I will say the stress on me was 100x less when we left him with friends or at a doggie farm. I was always consumed with worrying and hoping he wouldn't bark or pee when we were on the plane. He never did, but I worry.
