I had to put the heat on in our house for the first time this morning. Our thermostat has two options, "HEAT" and "EM HEAT".
WTF is "EM HEAT"?

That could be it. Like maybe if you're going away and don't want to leave the real heat on, emergency heat just keeps the pipes from freezing?
I found a helpful link

It's for "Emergency Heat." It's for when the regular heat isn't enough to actually warm the house to a safe level (to keep the pipes from freezing, keep people alive, etc). Sometimes in certain climates it gets so cold that heat pumps just don't work (thermodynamics....I got a D- in that in college, so don't ask me to explain!). So "Emergency Heat" usually adds an electrical heating element to add additional heat.
It uses electricity like MAD, so I woudln't recommend using it unless it's ACTUALLY an emergency.
