How soon should I start packing?
Hi! I'm a lurker
DH and I signed an acceptance letter on a beautiful home (after looking at over 2 dozen)..went over all the details of the loan (and signed about 70 pieces of paper). So now all we have to do is wait through the under writing process. Our closing date is 11/23.
How soon after we close can we start moving in? If you were me, would you start packing?

Re: How soon should I start packing?
You should have this in your contact. Most times you get possession at closing. ETA: we did on the house we purchased. We got the keys and were in the house 3 hours after closing demoing the kitchen. Sometimes the sellers want to stay extra and "rent back" for a few days. For some strange reason, our buyers wanted to close ASAP but we retained possession for nearly 30 days after closing.
When should you pack? When do you plan to move? I'd start by packing up all the stuff you don't use daily. Keep out clothing, some dishes and pots and pans but pack up rooms you don't use. Packing sucks and takes a long time and if you can do it a few hours each night, it goes by quick.
Unless otherwise specified, i would assume you should be able to move in as soon as closing is over. With both houses we bought, we were handed the keys during closing and went immediately over!
Assuming they aren't renting back, you'll be able to start moving in on the 23rd. As such, I'd start packing now! Start w/ the stuff you don't use daily. Clothes, books, knick-knacks, etc. Even in the kitchen, you can pack away a ton of stuff.
I always start "living meagerly" when I'm moving.

Our close date is 11/22 (but the seller requested to stay through 11/24 in the house). I didn't want to pack until we'd jumped through all the major hoops: the inspection (and the seller agreeing to fix anything important) and the appraisal coming back equal to or greater than our loan amount.
We just got the appraisal back yesterday, plus our loan person let us know the underwriter had tentatively approved us already. So I intend to start packing next week (we don't have a ton of stuff to move so I'm not in a rush).

all of our stuff was in our house less than 24 hours after the keys were in our grubby little hands. we're slackers and didn't start packing unless the week of the move though.
Have you seen my monkey?
Some people choose to paint and clean before moving in. If you need to do this, I would recommend waiting a few days. In our case, we moved right in that night.
Depending on how much space you currently have, you should start packing 1-2 weeks beforehand. We started packing the week before we moved and did one room a day since we only lived in a 1 BR apartment. It took a long time, but we got it all done. If you have a larger living space you would probably want to start sooner.
