Random BWLO question

When people say, "I was in labor for X hours" how do you tally that up? What is he official start or labor? Ladies that were induced how do figure your time?

Re: Random BWLO question

  • I was induced and I count from when I got Cervadil b/c I started having contractions right away.    In general I think with an induction it's less clear when you go through "stages" or milestones b/c of intervention (like my water was broken when I was still fairly closed, and probably wouldn't have been for someone else).

So, cervadil at 8PM on May 20 and baby born 2:50AM-something on May 22.  That's what I count.

  • I think we often tally our time by time spent laying in a hospital bed "having a baby" or time knowing that the baby was coming to birth (ie. contractions, water breakage, etc.) ... not actual "active labor".

I say, I was in "labor" for 15 hours, from the time pitocin drip started/they broke my water to the decision to have a c-sec.

I never got passed 3 cm, so technically I was only in early labor, not active labor....

  • I counted from the time my water broke.  It broke at 9:30 PM, Molly came at 6:59 PM.  I count that as 21 1/2 hours.
  • I say it from when the pitocin was started (and that is when my water was broken too).  So 9am - 1:50pm
  • With Taryn, I count my labor starting from when my contractions became timeable to birth.

With Tessa, I count from when pitocin was started, even though contractions weren't consistent until several hours later.

  • I count from when the contractions were painful and timeable 6PM Thurs, until I started pushing 9PM Friday, then I add the 3 hours it took that stubborn Tank to make her appearance.
  • I count from when I had timeable contractions and had no question if I was in labor or not.

  • I count from my first contractions.  However, my contractions started at an even 5 minutes apart.  I also include the time I spent pushing (about 8 minutes).  In total, I was "in labor" for just under 11 hours.
  • I count from my first contractions that were noticeable, when I started telling DH "I think this is it." Of course, things moved so quickly, I didn't really have much "early labor."

Contractions started at 10 p.m. exactly (I remember looking at the clock).

Nora was born at 3:29 a.m.

    5.5 hours!

This is where I get fuzzy. I had my membranes stripped and contracted all day, but it never got to the point where I needed to go to the hospital. Started cytotec that evening and kept contracting all night so much that I couldn't really sleep. But they broke my water the next AM. I am labor confused.

Using your logic I guess I'd go with the cytotec which would put me around 22 hours of labor to end up in a c section. Fail.

  • I was induced. At midnight the night before they inserted cytotec but we didn't start pitocin until 6am the next day. I count from the start of pitocin because that's when "labor" really started for me (contractions).

I labored from 6am-130pm when I was complete but couldn't start pushing until 4pm and he was born at 5:41pm. So, IMO, I was in labor for almost 12 hours.

  • I was induced at 9pm on 3/8.  Although I had some contractions on the cervidil, it did nothing for me.  They started pitocin at 6:30am on 3/9, and this is when I count labor started since the contractions ramped up.

I was at a 10 m at 8pm on 3/9, and then pushed until Liam arrived at 11:49pm. So I was in labor for just about 17.5 hours.

  • I saw from when my water broke to when she was born via c/s, which was 26 hours.  (Water broke at 5 pm Monday and Abbie was born 7:01 pm Tuesday.)

  • You know, I never know how to answer this question.  I woke up with 5-1-5 contractions around 4 am and got to the hospital around 6 am.  From 7 am until 11 a.m. I fought with this biitch of a nurse who kept trying to send me home.  She attempted to discharge me up to an hour before I was admitted!

I got admitted at noon and delivered at 6:01 pm.  So... how long was I in labor? I guess it depends on how you look at it.  I usually say "about 7" because they nearly sent me home 7 hours prior, and if the docs said I wasn't in labor then, well, I guess I wasn't.
