s/o BC after kids

Keep in mind I'm a pediatrician and I rotate through the NICU...

I personally wouldn't want my tubes tied after a c-section during the same operation.  I really don't like anything permanent and if gosh forbid something happened to my kiddo shortly after delivery and I knew I just permanently altered my reproductive tract, I'd be a mess.

    I'm with you.

I thought about it, being how I would already be having a procedure done and DH wouldn't have to schedule one of his own.

But I think as a woman, I would never be "done" having kids.

If something happend to DH, I'd always be open to remarrying and giving that man a child. . . morbid way of thinking, and I swear I don't want a new husband or anything to happen to mine, that's just where my mind goes.

I think men are different in that regard.

    Yep, my thoughts exactly.

  • After Alex, they were talking of doing a hysterectomy (sp?). That was enough to scare me from permanent measures. I don't think I could opt for tubes tied right after delivery.
  • Every woman I know that's had her tubes tied regrets it. No thanks.
  • I don't think I would ever want either one of us to get a permanent procedure done. Like you say, you just never know what can happen. I saw a story on Oprah last year where this couple had three kids--like maybe 8, 4, 2 years old?--and lost all three of them in a tragic car accident. (Horrible episode of Oprah, BTW--crying my freaking eyes out.)

She had had her tubes tied, thinking their family was complete with three kids, and now they had none.

Of course, the story had an upside--the couple was able to get pregnant via IVF and ended up having triplets, two girls and a boy... which was incredible given that they had lost three children, two girls and a boy.

Anyway, situations like that, although rare, are enough to scare me into never wanting to do anything permanent. Possibility of death of a spouse or divorce is another reason.

  • why is it they ask you 3-4 times during your c-section if you want it done?

  • I am not a permanent type person. I can not think of a circumstance in which I would get my tubes tied or ask DH to get snipped. I just always worry about the unknown.

My brother and his fiancee (who passed away in Aug) planned not to have children, she was 100% sure she didn't want them and he was ok with that. She asked him to get a vasectomy. He didn't. Thank goodness. He has since told DH that while he was ok with not having children he would also be open to the idea of having them if he gets into a relationship with a woman who wanted children. You just never know.

i don't know.  In the state of DE the woman has to have signed a paper 30 days prior to delivery consenting for tubal ligation so it's not an in the moment decision. She can say no though in the moment.

  • After Nolan we did nothing (well, avoided during the fertile period or just didn't have sex). This time I'm thinking about getting Mirena or something cause I'm not sure if we're done-done and even if so I don't like the idea of forever BC.
  • I thought about it but didn't want something so permanent right away.  DH will be getting a vasectomy in about a year.

I saw that episode!!  It was so sad, but the story was amazing.

I don't think I would ever do anything permanent either.  DH might get a vasectomy, but I wouldn't have my tubes tied or anything like that.

  • I know several doctors that won't tie during C-section or anything like that and make you wait at least 6 weeks before deciding because God-forbid something is wrong with the child and you decide you might want another along the way.

That being said, DH will take permanent measures when we are done. It is easier for a man to take permanent measures than a woman. He can have it done on a Friday and be back to work on a Mon. Plus if he ever needs his sperm again, they can go retrieve it if need-be.
