I re-homed one of my cats and it was the best decision I made...for both of us.
I had 2 dogs and 2 cats when I was married. XH finally took his dog back (9 months post-separation) and it was a huge relief for me. A few weeks later, my one cat, Peeka, started hiding out in the basement a lot and just being terrified of my DS. Granted, DS has been known to chase the cats (it's a constant struggle with him) and I think it was stressing her out. I knew she deserved to be in a home where she wasn't stressed and could relax and enjoy life.
I listed her on the Water Cooler at my company (kind of like Craig's List) and a co-worker took her to be a companion for her cat. She's been keeping me updated and said Peeka is thriving in her new home and is loving all the attention she's getting.
I won't lie -- part of me is so relieved that my menagerie was reduced by 50%. That's a lot of animals for a single mom to take care of on my own. The dog and cat I still have are like my family and they both seem to be happy and well adjusted to our situation.
To go along with your post -- part of me feels guilty for being excited about only having to buy half the cat food, or not having kitty footprints on my counters anymore (HATED that!!!). Put some ads out there and you might be pleasantly surprised that someone is willing to give your kitties a new home. Don't feel bad about it -- a loving home is a loving home...it doesn't matter who it's with.

Re: :: Ninja ::
My stbxh was really pushing me to re-home my cat and he suceeded when we sold our home and shocked me with the divorce news. We had to find a rental fast and the landowner refused pets and she lived close by.
Part of me is mad for giving my cat up so easily but I was in a bad fog in the moment. But at the same time, being a single mom with a 13 month old, I am kind of glad I have less to worry about at home.
