Anyone's LO have asthma attacks?

Cam has been fighting a virus the past week and he ended up in the ER on Tuesday night.  He had been wheezing that day and DH stayed home with him and gave him breathing treatments.  I got home at 7 and when I was changing him I noticed his chest was retracting, so I took him in.  They said he wasn't moving air and got him started on treatments and steroids right away.  It was one of the scariest things I've ever experienced.  We are staying on top of the nebulizer at home and doing the steroid for 7 days.  He hasn't had any more attacks, but he still has a lot of cold symptoms.  Our pedi said we didn't need to follow up unless he didn't improve and we could talk about it more at his 15 month appointment.  The ER doc said we would need to explore what his triggers are.  I feel so helpless until we know what those are.  Has anyone been through this with their child?

Re: Anyone's LO have asthma attacks?

  • We haven't dealt with it with our kids thankfully, but DH had asthma attacks as a small child (starting at just months old and continuing until around age 4) and I had them starting in elementary school and continuing through junior high).  They never did figure out DH's triggers, but think it had a lot to do with frequent bouts of croup as a baby.  Mine was cold air.  I had to make sure my mouth and nose were well covered whenever I was outside or in a drafty room.  Thankfully neither of us needed inhalers and we both outgrew it, although they did warn DH his most likely will come back as he ages.  I still will get a little "catch" if I'm out in the cold air too long, but I'm usually good about staying covered up if I'm going to be out longer than to go from car to building, etc.

I remember the nebulizer treatments and I have several nieces who have to use them all winter long.   Thankfully I liked books so I could distract myself while doing them.
