Vulvodynia and Sex

Hi there...I tried searching the boards but I couldn't find anything about this, so sorry if I missed a post that's been made about this already.

Does anyone else suffer from vulvodynia? For me I think it's not as bad as I've read it can be for some...the pain comes and goes, and only rarely gets very intense. But I always hurt after sex, and usually can't have sex for more than 10 minutes without it starting to hurt.

I was a virgin when I got married so I've only had about 7 months to try to deal with this...before I thought I was getting urinary tract infections, but I'm testing negative for them.

Anyway, was hoping for some tips from anyone else with a similar experience. I've tried ibuprofen and Vagisil after sex but it doesn't seem to really get at the pain. Is this something I could possibly get a pain medicine prescription for?

Re: Vulvodynia and Sex

  • See a gyn for a complete checkup. You might also have another issue.
  • Were you specifically diagnosed with vulvodynia? Is it a burning pain? You could also have vaginismus, which is similar but has to do with spasms in the vaginal canal.

Physical therapy can be really helpful (this might include dilators that you use at home and/or weekly appointments). I probably wouldn't go right to pain medication - you need to figure out the underlying cause of the pain. Definitely go to your OBGYN and get to the bottom of this and start a treatment plan.

I had vaginismus and my roommate has vulvodynia and vaginal spasms. I've been using dilators for over 2 years now and it has really helped.

And if the stormy weather came...I'd just kiss you in the rain... Daisypath Anniversary tickers image
  • If you feel like you're getting UTI's but testing negative, look into interstitial cystitis (IC).  That also sometimes causes pain after sex and UTI-like symptoms.  Find a good, qualified urologist.
