A question of dollars and sense UPDATE

Unusual situation.  I have a specialized area of expertise.  I work PT by choice and do various consulting work.

An interesting opport. came up and was requested to apply and interview.  I have gone through several preliminary phone interviews.  After the last one I now have the feeling the budget/funding is 'for lack of a better word' not great.

This is a 12 to 15 hour a week posit.  I can work it into my schedule. IF the $ is worth it.  that is the question- should I ask the $$ budget for this position before spending more time on interviews?  I would only ask if they call me back again.  I hate to waste everyones time, so I am stumped. Normally I would never discuss $ before an offer is made, but I get the feeling we a WAY apart on this.

I they mentioned at least 2 more interviews!

Thoughts?

Re: A question of dollars and sense UPDATE

  • thats a lot of interviews.

What makes you think the pay wont be in line with your expectations?

I would personally ride it out.  They may be dragging out the process to gather the funds/convince the right individuals of your worth.

  • I would wait and let them bring up the topic of compensation, then express your feelings/salary requirements at that time. No sense in rocking the boat until then. You may be pleasantly surprised.

  • UPDATE

So they called me back today to set up the next interview and she explained the next several steps.  It is oddly extensive for such a small amount of hours.

So..... I approached the $$.  I was very polite and made it clear I was being considerate of their time.

AUUGGGHHH we are $25.00 an hour apart!!  Talk about dead silence.  She told me about their research and the state average etc.  I politely explained that for this region is a HCOL and reminded her that their position offered no benefits etc. AND they are demanding a very specialized sub-division within the field.  I hire people out of college for more than they are offering!

Going on these interviews would have cost me money!  I am glad I went with my gut and brought this up early in this process.
