Re: S/o Cut Christmas trees: Partially-clicky poll

  • Growing up, we always did. Since DH and I have been together, we normally spend Christmas w/ family and we're not at home on Christmas and we don't have kids. So, every year we've had a very small (like table top) tree -- both real and fake.  But, I really want to get a real, real tree this year.

    ETA:

    Tree Basics:
Where do you get it (tree farm, family property, permit for forest land, etc., or "the attic")? I have gotten from farms and lots in the past.

When do you get/put up/decorate your tree? I plan for right after Thanksgiving, but I usually don't until closer to Christmas.  I'm going to try this year to get it up early.

When do you take down the tree? New Year's.

If you use a cut tree, what do you do with it when you take it down? They come pick them up if you leave them on the curb.

    Style:
What look/species do you like? Full, but with openings for ornaments.

Where do you put it?  Same place every year? I don't know.

    What colour lights? White.

What approach do you take to decorating (silver and blue, red and green, Victorian, eclectic, etc.)? Last few years, I've done all Starbucks ornaments (yes, I know I'm a dork and I have a ton!) and red & silver.  I think I want to do red and gold this year.

  • Tree Basics:
Where do you get it (tree farm, family property, permit for forest land, etc., or "the attic")?This is still being debated, I think trees need to come from a tree farm or nursery, but H says trees need to be fake or come from a parking lot.

When do you get/put up/decorate your tree? We're going the first Friday of December

When do you take down the tree? Sometime between Christmas and New Years, but not any later than that. Oh, but if we get a living tree this year, it'll definetly be down before New Years.

If you use a cut tree, what do you do with it when you take it down? Put it out on the curb for the Boy Scouts to mulch.

    Style:
What look/species do you like? I'm a douglas fir fan

Where do you put it?  Same place every year? Dunno yet, this is the first year we're putting up a tree

What colour lights? What approach do you take to decorating (silver and blue, red and green, Victorian, eclectic, etc.)? I like all white lights with a monochromatic scheme, think Pottery Barn type tree
  • Tree Basics:
Where do you get it (tree farm, family property, permit for forest land, etc., or "the attic")?  Tree farm, we got to the same one every year and choparoo!

When do you get/put up/decorate your tree?  Day after Thanksgiving

When do you take down the tree? Just after new year's.

If you use a cut tree, what do you do with it when you take it down? Toss it in the dumpster.

    Style:
What look/species do you like?  We like the Noble Fir type with the big heavy branches.

Where do you put it?  Same place every year?  Different places.

What colour lights? What approach do you take to decorating (silver and blue, red and green, Victorian, eclectic, etc.)?  We use multi-colored, the big ones and the little ones.  We do kind of a traditional hodge-podge of decorations.  No real theme.

    I like Douglas Fir

Where do you put it?  Same place every year?

    What colour lights?
    Multi

What approach do you take to decorating (silver and blue, red and green, Victorian, eclectic, etc.)?

Does this mean you'll be buying a whole new set of ornaments?

  • Tree Basics:
Where do you get it (tree farm, family property, permit for forest land, etc., or "the attic")?
    the garage

When do you get/put up/decorate your tree?
black friday. h leaves for shopping about 10 or 11pm thursday, after putting up the tree itself. i do all the "basic" decorating, then sleep on the couch and wait for him. we either put up sentimental ornaments together either when he gets back, or the next morning.

When do you take down the tree?
if i get super bored, before new years. otherwise, when i have time. i think no later than the 10th of january. that's pushing it.

If you use a cut tree, what do you do with it when you take it down?

    Style:
    What look/species do you like?
    basic?

Where do you put it?  Same place every year?
we're shooting for somewhere different every year, but we'll be running out of locations very soon.

    What colour lights?
white, it's prelit on our tree, and i don't like colored lights anyway.

What approach do you take to decorating (silver and blue, red and green, Victorian, eclectic, etc.)?
red and gold (our wedding colors Big Smile) as a "base", and then "sentimental" ornaments from our vacations together.

  • Tree Basics:

Where do you get it (tree farm, family property, permit for forest land, etc., or "the attic")?

Tree farm, we cut it down together every year

When do you get/put up/decorate your tree?

    The weekend after Thanksgiving.

When do you take down the tree?

    The weekend after Christmas.

If you use a cut tree, what do you do with it when you take it down?

I wanna say that the city picks it up with our trash for yard waste.

    Style:
    What look/species do you like?

I like the big full ones, DH likes the skinny sparser ones.  We pick the best one we can find at the farm.

Where do you put it?  Same place every year?

We used to put it next to our dining table. In our new house it will go in the entryway.

    What colour lights?

Colored. I like white lights, but DH was insistent about colored lights :p

What approach do you take to decorating (silver and blue, red and green, Victorian, eclectic, etc.)?

We do what I like to call a "modern take" on Christmas. Think bright colors, simple decorations, etc.

    Here's our tree:

  • Tree Basics:
Where do you get it (tree farm, family property, permit for forest land, etc., or "the attic")?   From our linen closet

When do you get/put up/decorate your tree?  After I clean up our dining room table to make room for the new centerpiece (the tree), and usually around Thanksgiving (before or after).

When do you take down the tree?   After the Super Bowl

If you use a cut tree, what do you do with it when you take it down?   n/a

    Style:
What look/species do you like?   I like my tree to be 3 feet tall and as fake as my smile to co-workers I don't like

Where do you put it?  Same place every year?   On the dining room table, so it's out of reach of my jumping, trouble making dog.  We've done this since last year (our first X-mas with the lil beasty).  Before that it was on the floor near the living room TV.

What colour lights? What approach do you take to decorating (silver and blue, red and green, Victorian, eclectic, etc.)?  No lights, and no theme.  DH and I have been buying 1 ornament each year we've lived together (since 2007) so it was REALLY sparse at first, so I added Mardi Gras beads from college to make it more decorated.  Now there are enough ornaments for our small tree to leave out my slutty Mardi Gras beads Angel

  • Tree Basics:
Where do you get it (tree farm, family property, permit for forest land, etc., or "the attic")?   Out of our garage. We are going to get a small real tree though and see how it goes now that the wee beastie is a bit older

When do you get/put up/decorate your tree?  Depends on work schedule/plans. I might try for the day after Thanksgiving.

When do you take down the tree?   Probably before New Years.

If you use a cut tree, what do you do with it when you take it down?   I am not sure what we will do. Yard waste?

    Style:
What look/species do you like?   I *think* Douglas Fir

Where do you put it?  Same place every year?   Platform at the top of the stairs. We will put the mini real one by the fireplace.

What colour lights? What approach do you take to decorating (silver and blue, red and green, Victorian, eclectic, etc.)?  White lights. I received an ornament a year from my Grandma until maybe 2 years ago so we use those, any other we have gotten as gifts, or on any trips. So we only use "sentimental" ornaments and it is a big mish mash of style.
