Lots of you want perfume for Christmas

I don't have any perfume anymore. I kind of think I should get some, but I am paralyzed when I think about how to pick one.

Do you just go into a dept. store and smell a bunch, then pick the one you liked best? Do you get a male's opinion? Do you have a "signature scent," and if so, how did you arrive at it? How many do you smell before you decide on the one you want to buy? How many different ones do you usually have at home?

The world of perfume is a world I don't really understand.

ETA: I'm not very picky, which is maybe why it's overwhelming. Usually everything I smell, my reaction is: "Eh, it's fine."

  • I am weird and I fully admit this before typing this response BUT, I vote for a brand whose manufacturer doesn't test on animals. YesYes

  • I always have to apply a tester somewhere, and then wait half an hour or so and see how it reacts with my skin.  I like things that sort of blend in a little, and don't smell precisely the same on me as they do in the bottle, but of course, some things start smelling a little weird and unpleasant.  I just keep trying things until something really clicks.

I have two signature scents, if you can call them that, and I start wearing one when I get tired of the other.

ed:  Oh yeah, definitely cruelty-free.  I don't even bother test-sniffing anything that isn't.

  • I have a couple different kinds here because I have scent ADD and usually buy a new one and get excited to use it before the other one is gone. Generally I pick my perfume based on smelling it on someone else and liking it lol.

  • RP, that site is nifty!

I think I will have to take someone with me when I buy because seriously, after a couple, they all start smelling the same. Definitely gonna need a second opinion, ha.

Or maybe I could just ask for it for Christmas (like all of you) or my birthday or something so I don't have pick at all!

I do this too.  A lot of perfumes give me headaches so I need to wear it to see how I react.  I try then try again then get a free sample and then finally buy.

  • I'm a total perfume wh0re.  I have about 30+ kinds.  I buy what I like, but I also try for variety.  In other words, I like to have one that's musky, one that's green-smelling, one that's floral...

If you're torn, buy some of the rollerball tubes.  They're less expensive than a full bottle.

    This is my siggy.
  • If you go to a Sephora they will give u a sample of a perfume so u can try it out.  I went once got 3 or 4 samples then went back and bought the one I liked the most.

I am glad you asked because I have the exact same problem as you.  Right night I am sticking with Neutrogena Body Oil, I know it is not perfume but I can't believe how many compliments I get from strangers saying I smell nice with that on.

Innnnnteresting. I tend to gravitate toward things that are not overwhelming. Subtle. Maybe I do have a perfume preference after all. Hm

  • I too have a signature scent.

I prefer lighter scents, but will not buy anything w/out trying them on.

  • I love DKNY be delicious...worn it for years now.

I just sampled Taylor Swifts new perfume and love it. Will probably buy that one next.

  • It takes me forever to pick a perfume because I will only try one per day. I try to go to the store and put it on as early as possible and then wear it for the rest of the day. I of course narrow it down to a few scents I'm interested in before I start this process. I only wear one perfume at a time because I like to have a signature scent (which was arrived at using the above stated process). I do ask people's opinions on it, generally it's my mother or a coworker or two that I'm close with.

It's getting close to Christmas time which means Sephora is going to have their perfume sampler available. They include a sample size of various perfumes and a voucher to purchase one full-size container once you choose which one you like best. Something like that might work well for you if you are interested in finding a scent.

  • I'm a complete nerd when it comes to scents/aroma/perfume. Here's what I know, after smelling three different aromas, you need to stop because your olfactory nerves stop differentiating between the smells.

What I do is make my own. I go to sephora and buy their little atomizer, and blend essential oils together with everclear. Yes, just regular old everclear alcohol. It's cheap and the aroma lasts all day long. Plus the options are literally endless.

I change it up depending on my mood, and right now I'm in love with a blend of sandalwood and bergamot.
