I thought this was odd, would you agree?

Ok, DH and I went to Chipotle tonight (yum!) we were waiting in the line. It was super busy and it was a really long line.

So there was this little girl, sitting alone in a booth (well it was a booth on one side, table, then chairs on the other side, kwim?) she was probably... well I would guess not yet two. There was also a little booster seat next to her, and a diaper bag.

Little girl got all fussy (after about 15/20 minutes of us being there, so they had obviously been there longer), and left the booth seat to go find her mom in the line. She toddles around, found her mom, then mom brought her BACK to the booth, and like yelled/stern-mom-talked to her telling her to sit there and be quiet or else. Mom had a younger kiddo on her hip as well, prob like 5/6 months? not too old anyway. She was with another mom who also had a kid on the hip, so no dad or anyone to help. The toddler was having none of that and started screaming she wanted to stay with her mom. So mom has kiddo come in line with her anyway.

Ummm. Isnt that totally inappropriate? To leave your little tot alone at a table for like 20+ minutes while you wait in line, and its SUPER busy, lots of people coming in and out. Super dangerous. She could have fallen off, walked out the door, been stolen, found something to chock on, endless possibilities. And it wasnt like the seat was right.there next to the line or something. It was uncomfortably far away to leave your kid, I wouldnt have even left the diaper bag there!

Most people were getting it to go, so although it was super busy, there were plenty of seats, so I dont get the saving the table either.

I totally gave her the side eye. One for leaving her toddler unattended like that, and two for then being angry that said toddler was fussy about sitting alone in a booth with nothing to do.

thoughts?

  • It's because she needs to go to college.

    Joking.

I've seen a lot of military surprise homecomings. It wouldn't work on me. I always have my back to the corner and my face to the door. Looking for terrorists, criminals, various other threats, and husbands.

  • Very inappropriate. The moms could have taken turns getting food and sitting with the kids. Or she could carry one kid & put one in a stroller/wrap/carrier of some sort. Or you know, have your kid stand next to you in line.

Yesterday at the store I passed a mom with a 2/3 year old who was singing in the cart. Kiddo wasn't that loud and seemed to be just trying to keep herself entertained. Mom said something along the lines of: "I'm so tired of your mouth. If you don't close it then I will pop you in it." I felt so bad for the kiddo. She immediately crumpled into a defeated little ball.

That just broke my heart.  One day that sweet little voice will be all grown up and she'll miss hearing that song.  Those sweet little baby voices brighten my day.

My response would have been, "If you pop that baby in her mouth, I'll pop you in yours."

  • Why on Earth would you stand in line at Chipotle for over 20 minutes when you could order online and have it in 15?

The Chipotle here just opened in July or August and we've always ordered online because the line is always out the door. K went in to pick it up once, and he said some guy in line got so pissed off that K was cutting that he swore at him and threatened to beat him up.

Anyway, the only things in your scenario that worry me are the distance, the crowd, and the weird stern talking. If I'm getting something for Bean (who's 2) from the Target cafe, I have her sit at a table while I pick it up and I leave her there when I throw the trash away. She's usually only a few steps away though, and for some reason she gets a kick out of sitting there by herself. I think it makes her feel like a big girl or something.

You can place Chipotle orders online? Do iPhones work? Dang, I've been doing it wrong this whole time then.

Back to the OP though, I'd call it borderline at least. Maybe since it was busy that was her method of saving the booth/table for their group? Doesn't seem like the kid was old enough for that though. I thought at that age that kids should be gripping onto their adult's pant leg for dear life.

Yea,that is quite a bit to qualify as an only. I'm trying to give her the benefit of the doubt. It was just a bad day or something.

But what I meant was, at 2, I'm not as worried about her choking, falling off her chair, etc as I was in the first couple years. She basically knows not to stick anything but food in her mouth (except play-doh, apparently it tastes like candy), she's more balanced and so forth.

A- Yes! If we're out and about and decide we want it, we order it on K's iPhone. They have an app available on their website.

  • The chipotle app is awesome. You can even pay through it so you go straight to the register for your food.

because we just decided to go there while we were out? You come off as extremely condescending here... I was willing to stand in line, so why would you care how long I waited?

Yeah, if it was dead in there, the mom had a visual of the kid 100% of the time, and was only a few steps away, being gone for like the one mintue you mentioned I would not be writing this post.

I'm sorry Jilly, I really didn't mean it that way. I was just trying to tease with the first comment while also letting you know u could order from your phone if you have Internet on it. I'm honestly sorry I offended you. The second comment I was just trying to get involved in the discussion by saying I wouldn't be as concerned about some of the other things you mentioned. I'm on my Nook, so I'm sorry if the formatting is weird.
  • Very odd and in no way OK.  I know if I left baby girl alone for more than 15 seconds, she would be outside, dancing and twirling in the sidewalks, waving "Hi" to every one.  If mom wanted to have a nice lunch with her friend, than she should have brought a stroller, or switched off.  Suck it up and be responsible.
